I notice some use deans and others ec3. What would be the reason for going deans?

It is all about preference and using your batteries with various chargers. I personally use Deans for this size of battery as I think they are a perfect match. If you do go to Deans, put the female plug on the battery end to avoid any battery shorting mishaps.

Deans are more readily available, most batts I order come with a deans on it, so no mods needed (after you convert the heli) just charge and fly.

Ditto.
Plus, I was able to make a Deans-to-EC3 adapter with the EC3 I cut off the ESC. Now I can use the stock battery with EC3 through the adapter, or any battery with a Deans.
