On the sim, it seems like the altitude holds pretty well. At the field, I need to constantly "manage" my collective input to try and stabilize my altitude, even when hovering. Normal?

Yes, especially in changing winds. Wind will make the blades more efficent requiring less stick to hover and less wind will require more stick to hover. Also if you are in or out of ground effect will effect it, something not well duplicated in many sims.

If it was a "set it and forget it" aircraft, it'd be called an airplane. You need to constantly fly a heli - which is why I like flying both the models and the full scale aircraft. :)

If it weren't challenging, I'd get bored pretty quickly. Just ask my wife how long I've stuck with most of my hobbies. There's a certain satisfaction when you get to the point where you can hold a constant altitude when flying circuits *in spite of* the wind. I'm getting close and it's something I take great pride in attempting to perfect.

It will feel like second nature if you stick with it.
