View Full Version : Anyone care to help me choose the right servos for t600e>bell222 project?

Hello all, the time for me to try my hand at more than a pod and boom is here AND as
usual, i'm a bit over my head at the start.

I'm putting a 600e into a fun-key bell 222, the 600 was my 'trainer' and currently has
ds821 servos, which I don't feel comfortable with in the scaler. My goal is to
have a setup that gives very smooth, authoritative scale like flight, it's
really important to me that it fly as smooth and scale as possible.

So far the futaba 9252's that are in my other 600 look good, but are they the best choice?????

I was wondering if yall would be so kind to share the servos that you chose for
your 50 size scale projects and why.

I'd also like to know if I should look at relatively slower, but more powerful
servos, or should it be faster servos with lots of expo???

Also any advice on retract servos would be hugely appreciated!

Thanks!
Gimbal Lock

9252s are fine. For scale, you don't need the top-of-the-line super servos like you might want for hard 3D, but you want reliability. The 9252's, or an equivalent are great.

Hi Gimbal Lock

I am using Futaba S9551, these are low profile coreless digital servos. I used these so i don't have any clearence issues with the elevator servo when installed in a scale fuselage.

Here's the spec's

1. Speed 0.11sec/60 at 6.0v
2. 8.8kg/cm at 6.0v
3. Size 40.5x20x25.4
4. Weight 45g

Very reasonable price over here in Hong Kong 600 hkd

Hope this helps

Thanks Rodan,

I was hoping that was the case, because I like the flying feel of the 9252.

Any idea how much torque is actually needed for the retracts? I saw one post where a guy was using jr791's with like 290oz/inch, is that much needed? Also saw a post where a fellow switched from retract servos to standard on the 222 due to endpoint problems....

Thanks again!

Thanks Justy!

That 9551 does look good, it's way more torque than the 9252, but is only 5usd more over at servo city.

They weigh 5g less each also.

How do you find the metal gears holding up? Any trouble with them getting slop?

Hi Gimbal

Yeah they are a great servo for the money. I am still building my trex 600e(well waiting for for duff 401 to be replaced), so i have no experience with slop, etc; but i do not think it will be problem. The 9252's have a good reputation but i used the 9551's because they suited my needs better.

This Trex 600e will be test flown for about 10-20 flights and then its going into a Funkey jet ranger.:). First flights next week.. weather permitting..... the weather in Hong Kong this month has been dreadful!

Enjoy your build

I have built a similar Airwolf fuselage and also have a Bell222 in the works. I run Futaba 9252 on cyclic and then switched to 9202 since I had a few sitting around. 9202 was the standard servo for 50-60 size helis back before the digital servos, so they are perfectly fine for the T-rex 600 (which is a 50 size).

As for retracts, you might want to consider regular high torque servos instead of retract servos. Dedicated retract servos are not proportional, and thus will not be able to slow down for the scale appearance. I am using 3 Hitec HS225 for the retracts, and they work perfectly. Servo slowdown is done through the transmitter's servo delay function.

Thanks for the tip on the HS225's steph280. I've read of enough headaches regarding standard retract servos that the retracts will certainly be on some good propo servos, and those look pretty good.

Here's my plan so far: DIYRC light kit, futaba9252 on cyclic, still undecided on retracts, but those 255's may be the thing.

Those DIYRC light kits are awsome. I just fitted their beacon light to my wolf and it looks realistic. The tailfin light looks like it could take a 8mm LED without cover, so I got one on order.

I am looking for idea to fix the LED wires within the fuselage. I was hoping I could use some tape so they are concealed for cleaner look. Anybody have suggestion for tapes that would stick to fiberglass well?

Hey Steph, that mini-beacon looked interesting, its good to hear a first hand report.

I don't know how well it'll paint, but foil duct sealing tape should hold very well to the inside of the fuse, and you could mold it around the wire for a conduit-like result.
