I saw an article on blade balancing where the cg was adjusted by adding tape close to the bolt hole rather then than the tip. Is there any reason why one method would be preferred over the other if they both end up arriving at the same cg? I tried the shaft balancing act described in the finless videos, but now wonder where to put the tape.

Only reason I could think of would be the root isn't traveling at such a high speed, tip get going pretty fast.

The only thing I might question, is if having so close to the holder, would it actually change the cg much when flying?

Any engineers care to chime in....?

Theroetically a balanced blade is a balanced blade....

they both do end up reaching the same goal of getting the CG the same. I add the tape near the tip to adjust mine if needed. after that, when balancing the blades, add the tape to the CG point of the lighter blade. this will keep the CG in the same place and still balance the blade. MOST CF blades should be matched for CG and balance or at least very close

I bought a balancer the other day and the instructions said to add either "balancing tape" or electrical tape to "either end" to make the CG the same as "blade 1". I had to add to the root because that was the lighter end of "blade 2" and it was required to get the CG of "blade 2" to match.

Here's the cool thing... IF your blades balance to each other AND their CG's are "the same" (and you CAN have one without the other!!) then at speed, all parts of the blades will evenly match their corresponding parts of the other blade. It just HAS to work! It is SOFA KING COOL!!!:Bang:banana:Bang

It's nice when you measure and balance everything...and on the firt flight the blades are perfectly in track...!!:YeaBaby::YeaBaby::YeaBaby::thumbup::thu mbup::thumbup:
