I got an Extreme with an open tail gear with grey gears. Someone told me that I need to change the tail shaft because the older one is too week. And also need to get new gears too. Any Infos please.

X I ran the grey gears here in kuwait for 6 months and I flew them everyday in the heat and the sand and they never failed..They will wear out befor they fail..MA had a few failures but not alot of them...I would run them and after they wear out then upgrade to the black ones

The final version of the molded tail gears are gray. The gray color gears are the ones shipped with all new boxes.

The tail output shafts are now certified to be what the MFG says they are. The old shafts where not and some varied in hardness. The issue is that some of the shafts in the original batches where a bit too hard and could suffer a failure due to impact damage. This can be a hit during an auto or event slamming it in the car door on the way to the field.

The final version of the shafts uses set screws instead of the roll pin. It is also very strong as I can personally attest to.

I know this has been very confusing. If you have questions contact MA, but in short the only thing that should not be used are the black gears.

Hope that helps some.

My concern is the shaft. My shaft is using roll pin not set screw. Meaning that I have to change to the new shaft. Have anyone damage the old shaft while in flight(in the air)?

Thanks for infos,
X

Just got it back from MA from updated the shaft to use set screw. But the gears are two difference colors, one is black and other is grey. Is that sound right for two colors.

Thanks,

I talked to Tim about the gears. The gears vary in the color of grey they are. He says some of them in the same batch do looker darker than others and some may even appear to be black. All the gears are the same now, they are all set up for set screws.

If the gears are held by rollpins , you need new gears and output shaft ; new gears are fixed by grub screws as davidh says .... new part no's are shaft 123-90 with gears 123-92

He already had the gears and shaft changed out. He was concerned about the varience in color of the two gears.

I can vouch for the color variance. My latest box has grey gears that are just about as black as the very first ones.

The newest gear sets have one grey gear that is pinned. That is the gear that goes to the torque tube. The gear that goes to the tail hub now has a black ring around it and two set screws that tighten against the new shaft, which has dimples instead of a hole in it. As Eric said, the shafts are all "certified' now which helps make sure the hardness is correct, avoiding the pesky problem a few people have had with the shaft breaking... I was at the Min Air shop last week, and Tim is inspecting/checking each one himself prior to sending them out.
