In Bob's soldering tutorial he used 60/40 tin/lead rosin solder. Is it OK to use lead free solder as that is all I have access too?

The electronics industry is switching over to lead free. Your solder will work, but you have to be more careful while working. It's more sensitive to the temperature range at which you work. I would cut and re-tin the leads on anything you solder as mixing the two can lead to failure of the joint if done poorly.
