Ok guys...some of you may already have discovered this stuff but Valspar Plastic paint is "fantastic" :clappp:clappp
I decided to play with a spare canopy I had and try this stuff.....well, it dries fast, can be double coated within 5 -10 minutes....covers great.....and drys with a smooth hard sheen with no clearcoat required. The spray nozzle can be a mist or a heavier coat.
I have used several model paints in the past, but so far this has my vote for Cost, coverage, and finish....see the pics and you tell me....:thumbup:

It was either at Lowes or Home Depot....I forget which one...I had them out there for a while.
A lot of people complain about the plastic canopy, but I think they are very good. They are cheap, light, and easily repaired using CA, cloth, and kicker....
Mine has many many flights and 1 very hard contact with tera firma.....and it's still kicking...

Actually, I am having trouble with my canopy. The grommets in my canopy. The bit of plastic they used to "grab hold of" is all gone. Now the "grommet hole" in the canopy is a bit too big.
Anyone have a cool trick for fixing this kind of problem? Pics attached...

Xonby,
I had the same problem - I have just epoxied mine in place.
Cheers,
Mike.

Yeap, epoxy or CA or both. Might have to build up little 'holders' to keep it in place, use some left over plastic bits and epoxy them all up, shape to fit and just be gentle with installation and removal from there on out.

Actually I have a great fix for that......
I took a pair of old briefs (kickers)(whatever) the reason is the material is fairly thick and elastic. The weave when hit with ca acts like a strong fiberglass
Placed it over the hole,,,soaked it with CA and moulded it to conform to the shape. and hit it with kicker.....then you have to drill a new hole. Works great and I have repaired my canopy splits the same way.....
to drill the hole I usually just force my exacto blade thru and ream to the corret size.

Where did you get the "tinted" CA?? Strange...
Ok, that was wrong... Horrible and uncalled for. I think I just threw up in my mouth! :wow2:

Well mjdee, out of context this question sounds a bit "sicko", but might I have a pair of your underwear? Your fix looks GREAT! :clappp
Thanks!!

I'm sure with 3 men in the house...you should find something to work....
Seriously....I just happened to grab then to make a repair....and the fabric has a stretchy weave to it that just works great with the ca....it soaks in....conforms to irregular areas...It just works great....I keep thinking to get some figerglass but this works better....
If you try it...soak it with thin ca...work it down around the area to be repaired till the ca starts to harden....keep laying it flat...then hit it with Kicker....permenant repair !!:clappp
And "NO" you may not get into my pants !! for my underwear !!:...::...:

HAHA, no kidding Jagged Edge... never fails...
Anyway, GREAT idea for a fix... Why do I think that this is one fix that would NOT show up in R/C Modeler if submitted to the "Reader Tips" section?

FYI I repair my canopies with Elastoplast cloth bandage tape. It is very strong, flexible and unlike clean undies self adhesive. It conforms nicely to the curves and once in place I soak it with thin CA. Works quite well. I cannot compare it to the undie-fix...yet ;)

Does the ca soak thru to the plastic...or does it just harden the tape and the adhedive of the tape still has to do all the work?

Good question. I am not sure, but none of my repairs have come off so far. The undies+CA approach my achieve a more permanent or less flexible bond to the canopy but I guess you have to hold it in place while it dries and I hate gluing my fingers to the heli ;)
