View Full Version : shutting down the engine, clamp line or radio?

Is it ok to just clamp the fuel line and let it run dry, or is this not good for the engine? The DX7 has a shutoff feature where you drop the throttle trim all the way down and it kills the engine, however, that feature does not work while in throttle hold (kinda stupid if you ask me). So while still in T hold, I've been clamping the line and letting the engine die. The other option is to land, go into throttle hold/normal, stop the blades, go back out of hold (making damn sure you are in normal mode and throttle all the way down), and then trimming down to kill the engine. Seems that last way is more likely to go wrong. If the trim worked in hold, then it would be easy...
How do you guys kill the engine after landing (if you have a DX7), clamp the line or use the radio?

Either run it dry and auto in, or clamp the line.

Yes it will not work in T-Hold, you will have to have you own procedure to cut your engine. I auto in, land, goto normal mode, release T-Hold and use the gear switch to cut the engine. I also have a procedure to start my engine and if you follow it all the time it becomes second nature (no hotstart or hydrolocking).
Good luck

I always run it dry at idle since I never want to leave raw fuel in an engine. Some fuels claim this is not necessary but I don't buy that.
Taking it a step further from the old school of thought, I add a few drops of Marvel air tool oil before going home. Picked this up from Clarence Lee, RCM magazine's engine guru. Clarence claimed that the air tool oil has additives to inhibit rust in a wet environment. I've been using it for about 20 years...

I close the throttle with trim to kill it and then clamp the line before resetting the throttle trim (I use the feature that allows you to reset it with a single flick of upward trim), except for the last flight of the day, when I pull the feed line to the filter and run it dry.
You could set up a kill switch like Finless did:

What? No poll?
After landing in throttle hold, I flip to normal, collective to idle, flip the throttle hold off, then use the throttle cut to kill the engine and clamp it once I reach the heli. At least I think that's how I do it.
