Just purchased a used 9Z and cannot get into the name change screen. The previous owner says he never set a password for anything. I used the radio this weekend so it works fine but am puzzled why I cannot get into that screen...Any help?

If you can not get into the name change screen. Then someone has password protected it. The name screen can be password protected only. And the rest of the radio can be password protected only. You have two choices.

1. Send the radio to Futaba and let them clear the password.

2. Find someone with a Service Menu Enabler and let them clear the password.

There is a lot of 9Z owners that have Service Menu Enabler/Campac from Model Gadgets.

Now another scenario.
Are you in the correct menu for putting the name in the radio.
There is two places to put names in the radio. One of the is the Model Name menu. This is in the MDL menu and goes by MNA on the second line. This is where you name each individual model.
The place to put the USER's Name is in the System (SYS) menu. The User Name (UNA) is on the second line of the menu.

If it has been password protected, it will ask for the password when you open the screen.

Just trying to help you out with all possibilities.

It asks me to enter an ID number but everything I try does not work. The previous owner says he never set an ID for it so I guess I will need to find someone with the proper device open it up. Fortunately this problem does not affect the use of the radio. It worked just fine this weekend.

Thanks!

Ok. If it is asking you for an ID number when trying to change the User Name, someone at sometime has entered a Password.
Yes the other part of the radio will not be affected unless they password protect it also.

The Service Menu Enabler will allow the service menu to be brought up and you can see the password in that menu or delete it.

This is the one that I have. I have the 64K dual pack. That was the only one offered when I got mine from Angelo a few years ago.

I have corrected problems on quiet a few 9Z's with this device that kept the owners from having to send them at for service.

This is the same device that a service center will use to calibrate the sticks and switches.

This radio came with a little circuit board incased with yellow heat shrink. On one end there are 5 long pins. The whole assembly is about 1 1/2 inches long. Do you know what this is for?

That sounds like the shorting plug that goes in the battery to be able to cycle the transmitter battery.
Being the heat shrink is yellow, I would think it came from Radio South.
I have a couple of them and heat shrink on them is gray. These came from Great Planes.

Some of the cyclers and chargers will not cycle or charge the transmitter battery due to it have a diode on the circuit board in the battery. The shorting plug will plug into the receptable that is on the battery. This will then allow the battery to be cycled.

That is what it sounds like the circuit board you have is to me.

Thx David. That makes sense. I really need to get a little deeper into the manual to figure some of these things out for myself!

Henry,
The easiest way to learn about the 9Z is to just ask questions. There is lots of tricks and other information you will not find in the manual. I am been using the 9Z since it came out in late 1993. I have really never looked at the manual. I was just always asking people about the radio that were using it.
Any questions you have, just ask.

Also you want find anything about the shorting plug for the battery in the manual. That is not a Futaba product. That is a device that Radio South came up so the transmitter battery could be fast charged and cycled.
