Setting the Gyro up to a computer Tx/Rx (DX6i - AR6200)

First go into the menu and select Gyro put it into Gyro mode or F.mode.
I've not looked at the F.Mode yet but i will be doing soon. Then i may add it on to this at a later date.

F.MODE ADDED
F.MODE is selected the option of choosing either rate that is assigned to NORM or STUNT modes is available.
By assigning 0 or 1 to NORM or STUNT, the gain value is automatically selected whenever the Normal or Stunt
flight mode is selected.

Once you have set the Tx menu, you now have to set the Gains to the Gyro. Gains are set by a percentage. What you need to do is set one above 50% for HEAD HOLD MODE and the other below 50% for RATE MODE.
At 50% i found that this is the Gyro's starting points it seems like its not working.

At this stage it would be a good idea to watch this Finless Bob Video
http://video.helifreak.com/?subpath=finless/hdx300&filename=tail_gyro.wmv

This Video is so you that can under stand whats going on with the tail and Gyro because if thats not setup right then you won't be able to set the Gyro to work with the DX6i.

This will be a good starting point, set the Gyro switch on the Tx to the "0" position this will be HeadHold. Then in the Gyro settings on the Tx set the Rate to 65.0% so this puts the Heli into Head Hold mode. Set the rate on the Tx in Gyro setup so that position "1" is 40.0% for Rate mode. These settings should get your Gyro working so that you can start fine tuning it. You need to adjust in small increments.

When the red light is on then its in RATE MODE, When the red light is off its in HEADHOLD MODE and When the light is flashing red the Gyro is INITIALISING.

I can't give you exact settings because as we all know every Heli's different.

I hope this has helped.

Can't wait till next week...I'm getting a 6200 Rx and the new 0704B Gyro for my Belt/DX6i.

I've got all this to come! Yipee!!

This is (and ive tried it in many different places) the only place to put it.
If you try to mount it anywhere else it just won't work as it should.

That is the correct mounting position, you cannot have it vertical like the old headhold.

This part is the wrong. In rate mode the light will go off. When in HH mode the light will stay on. It's also worth noting that when you move the rudder stick in HH mode the light will flash (two flashes then a pause) and this is perfectly normal.

One other comment. I have an SG90 on the tail which has a lot of travel. I had to turn the servo limit pot all the way down to avoid binding but you may not get this problem with other servos.

Yes your correct about the light it was a typing error :o:oops:

I have just ordered one of these to fit on my Beltrex. What is the correct mounting position, as I do not see the thumbnail pics!!!

This is the correct mount for the Gyro

Ok, the setup with the DX6i went well, but I cannot get it fine-tuned.

Starting off in RATE mode, [ my setting of 0 on the Tx ] I have a setting of 23%, and the copter is quick in yaw response and very directionally stable.

Switching to HH, I am at 60%, the tail is steady [ no wagging ] , but the heading is not stable and I get right yaw drift. I have not touched the factory settings on the gyro itself.
How do I correct this?

Thanks,

Mike

Mike do you have any trim or subtrim set on the gyro channel if so set it to zero

There is no yaw trim n the Tx, nor any sub trim in the Tx model settings Erwin

Ok, then you can try to trim it out with your subtrim on the gyro channel

But if i then go back into RATE, will the trim not be wrong?

[apologies if I am being dull, it is Monday!!]

Yes in rate it will be off but then you adjust the servo so you hit the "sweetspot" in hover .
In rate mode, hover and trim the heli so it holds its direction, land and trim back to zero wilst looking at the servo so you will see the amount of arm movement (for instance if the arm moved 1 mm to left adjust the servo 1mm to the right)

Hello all...
I am in the process of setting up my Belt CP with a new DX6i and AR6200
I was going by the zip file at the start of your thread and was wondering if the speed control would plug into the AR6200 in the Throttle slot...the set up left that out...and the throttle slot is the only one left beside the Batt/Bind slot.

I have the HH gyro sitting on the same platform as the old one. Is it a "must" for the gyro to be aligned with the purple stripe lengthways, in line with the boom?

OK. Mounting with the purple stripe in line with the boom or perpendicular to the boom has made no difference. No matter what my Tx settings are, I cannot stop clockwise yaw drift [when viewed from above] in HH mode, despite the fact that the tail is pretty much rock steady in RATE mode. If I set the gain on the Tx above 62%, I get the "wagging tail", and anything lower than 62%, the drift/creep rate just increases. I have expired 5 batts today fiddling with servo positions, Tx settings, etc, all to no avail.
Anyone got any suggestions?????? Greatly appreciated. :cheers

Hi Mike
If I have time this weekend I'll try to make a video on how to find out in what position a gyro should be mounted.

Doesn't seem to matter Erwin, as long as it is horizontal and not vertical. I get the same rate of creep whatever. What i have noticed this morning is that when I have set the trim in Rate mode [and the copter is stable directionally], when I then switch to HH mode, there is a twitch of the tail servo, which puts a small amount of increased rotor blade angle through the servo arm. This must obviously be sufficient to produce the drift. When I then adjust the actual servo position along the boom, this has no effect.

This sort of stuff really annoys me, cos I like to understand the dynamics of what is happening; I don't like to just do it.

Can you get it first stable in HH ,I mean forget for now about rate just get it locked in HH with rudder subtrim (not trim on the sticks) untill there is no creep ?

Just tried Erwin - thank heavens for a fyable day. With a good 20% rudder sub-trim, it is as good as I have seen so far.

What should my expectations be here??

Should the heli be steady in hdg in hover?
Should I expect it to work better when the heli is in motion?
Will there always be a small amount of heading drift?
If the HH is spot on, will the RATE mode be poorer, and v-v ?

Sorry Mike I am at a loss here, do you still have the creep with 20% sub-trim ( that much ) ?

See the thread below, but I think I have stumbled on success!!

I remain unconvinced!!! Persistence is everything.
