View Full Version : Irritating flights... Reborn Hurri.

For a 3rd time I went out for a 550 test "flight" this morning. The usual field I fly at was charging for parking today due to the 4th of July fireworks show happening 12 hours later.. so I went to a small local park with a baseball diamond mildly sprinkled with early morning walkers. My Trex'325' was out for its maiden using cncheli's metal Mini-Titan head.. The Mini-T head uses leading edge control which was an interesting experience both in setup and flight compared to Aligns trailing edge control head. In my opinion it is much more responsive and quick than its Align counterpart. Flight went great and required hardly any adjustments to be made at the field.
Then it was the Hurri's turn. As "unused" as this heli is I have repeatedly found issues which have frustrated me but also given me a sense of accomplishment figuring out and fixing the problems. I'd rather those accomplishments be from flight but I'm willing to take a few hits due to buying a used heli. Last night I found more issues with tattered wiring which I cleaned up, cut, stripped and re-soldered. Confident with my fixes I wasn't too worried about at least getting a hover out of her. I was very curious how the governor would act. I'm using a CC80 with the latest software. The castle link makes it almost a joy to program compared to moving the stick up and down for half an hour. Spinning up the blades I am always surprised how much slower 1800rpm of head speed is versus the little franken-trex-mini-t spun up using a 12T tooth pinion, 430xl @ 95% across the board. The 550 spun up extremely smooth, lifted off the ground, and felt like a fricken dump truck.. I don't know how or when I changed it but the tail was reversed :bomb: and was overly responsive. So the super quick over achieving tail combined with the dump truck over filled with concrete handling made for NO FUN. Landing felt impossible. I sorted the tail for the most part and made another attempt but quickly set her down. I decided the 3151's are a bad idea for this big bird. ([EDIT] Lesson learned. It's not the servos, it was the head speed being too low.)
So with that said.. I decided to ground the 550 until I can get my hands on some better servos that fit the CHP frames. Took the heli apart and began the rebuild using CHP's CF frame. So big bird won't be able to redeem herself until next month.
Apologies for the novel. :dontknow

jagged.... sounds to me like way to much pitch to early.or perhaps not enough head speed but with your cc esc that should be covered. where's your pitch curve at. she sahould be nimble as bro....

That CF frame looks nice and the 6 cell tucks right under there. Dump truck? Wait until you fly your Hurri around a few times and then go back to your T-Rex. The squirrelly responsiveness of the T-Rex instills confidence and is quite entertaining to fly.
Drove by Hansen Dam about an hour ago. What a mad house. I bet it will be a real mess in the AM.

I'm sure you're right, although at the time it felt like not enough pitch which may have been not enough headspeed. I went through the Finless 550 videos and re-setup the head along side the master himself last night. I could finagle it for a few weeks and get it tuned up.. Shortly there after I'd take it all apart again to swap frames. As much as I'd like to believe it would all go back together again without much tuning I'd just like to get moving on the other frames. I've had the electronics out of this beast at least 5 times in just 3 attempts to fly it. Thats 100 4" zipties. lol.
No offense to anyone using them. I absolutely hate these plastic frames.

dbl post. Grrr.
Rather than wasting space with this dbl post..
I cut the plastic nubs off the back of the pitch gauge for my 450 which allows it to fit the RCP 500mm blades.

Hey JE
Is that new frame of yours compatible with the stock Hurricane aluminium parts?
i.e. the hurry motor mount boom clamps bearing blocks etc?
Looks good

Yes. The kit comes with Gaui aluminum bearing and boom blocks. Uses but does not include the Gaui aluminum motor mount. Since I upgraded the tail everything is metal except the sea saw. :YeaBaby:

CHP duh Rediheli, Yes I have an e-mail alert for that frame looks to be very compatable with a lot of batterys. And I like the direct ccpm configuration. how well does this frame ly compared to the stock frame. Did I hi-jack this thread

Thread hi-jack until your heart is content my 550 friend. :D
Last time they came in stock I didn't get the email notification and they disappeared within a few hours. Glad I had the $ at the time or I'd still be waiting and pissed I missed out the first time around.

How long have you had the frame?? how many flights???

No flights. I received them just short of a couple weeks ago (ordered on the 23rd). Today was the last straw and I decided to switch over.. but i need smaller servos. Futaba 9650's, Hitec 5245's or something comparable.

apart from everything else its nice to see a frame where they actually thought about the battery.kinda waiting for someone to bring out a nitro with a realllllllllyyyyyyyyyy long fuel line.would make as much sense:confused:

Are those the same size as the DS821's??

I would try the heli with no governor mode first and see what head speed your getting. Change pinions if your unsatisfied with the speed as it will be a dump truck at 1800 rpm compared to a 450. 2300-2400 is where you want to be for a good 3d on this size heli.

What's wrong with the 3151's ?

My H550 is heavy due to the 8S A123 (640g) batteries but at ~2200rpm is livey enough for sport flying with S3151 on the swash. I guess it depends what flying style you are seeking ? Certainly at 1800rpm any H550 will be a *****cat with no real pop and tame cyclic response. If you want high agility then bump up the headspeed to 2200rpm or more and use lighter paddles.

Looking back I have to agree I shouldn't blame the servos. iI'm sure t was mainly due to not enough head speed. When i tested the time before last i didnt use the gov and had better results. Even at that time it didn't feel right. I'm used to a 325 bladed heli with decent speed servos.
No matter. It's on its way to become a carbon fiber framed big bird.
I'm going to paint a new canopy like my RZ with yellow black and white (woohoo for big bird).

yeah going by the hs calculator mines running at about 2200 its way more stable than the twrecks but it ****ing blasts off if you feed it some throttle :YeaBaby:

Thinking about it more.. I was probably 500rpm away from having a really nice flight. lol.

I'm gonna re-iterate what everyone else has said...
I've had a lot of experience with Trex 450 derived helis - mostly using Rotoworkz frames... 3S thru 6S and Neu motors with Kontronik ESCs. I've also tried a reasonable variety of blades.
Trex 450s really come alive above 2700 - 2800 headspeed (depending on blades). 3000 RPM is lively.. I've flown up to 3200 - 3300 (briefly).
For a Hurricane 550 I'd say that 2000 - 2100 give similar flying characteristics to a Trex 450 at maybe 2600 - 2700 RPM. Of course this depends on weight, blades, power characteristics etc. my 550 is a little heavy (2.5 Kg all up) but then my 450s are typically a little 'porky' as I tend to use quality (often heavier) components and add niceties like LiPo alarms etc.
At 2200 - 2300 HS the 550 feels like a Trex 450 up around 2900 - 3000 HS. It's heavier (of course) and inertia makes it feel 'different' but it has loads of pop and a huge sense of stability compared with the 450.
Running at 1800 with a 550 would be lethargic if you just put down a 450 running 95% with an Align 430 motor... simply no comparison.
