View Full Version : Hovering fine, then responds to phantom inputs?

G'day
My Belt CP will be hovering nice and stready, and then suddenly it seems to respond to inputs that I haven't given. It might be that the throttle dips, or the elevator suddenly causes the heli to veer backwards, or the pitch increases and the heli quickly gains altitude.
I'm using the standard TX. It is down to the last two leds re battery - can that be a cause?
Cheers

That would be a good reason. I never let mine go past the greens.

Get a computer Tx.
The stock Tx cost me alot of £££££'s :bawl Its now where it belongs, in the bin ;)
They get loads of rogue signals from everywhere Mobile phones are the main culprits! :arggg:
Whats a computer TX got to do with this... if he was flyign with a computer TX at 20% battery i'm sure he wouldnt have signal at all for control.
Always keep your Radio in the Green!!!

Just not sure I can justify a better radio at my level of skill.. But if I was to - any comments on the 2.4g 6ch Futaba? Seems to be good deals for radio and Rx here in Bangkok..

Any 2.4Ghz computer Tx/Rx will be a massive improvement to the stock Tx/Rx
So the answer to your question is yes if its cheap then get one you'll never look back.

Absolutely that can be the cause. I never fly mine without at least 4 LEDs lit up.
Replace all eight batteries in the Tx. If you're still having problems let us know and we'll do a little more trouble shooting.
A computer Tx is nice to have, but if you're just learning to fly I'd stay with the stock one and use the money for spare parts to keep flying.
Once you can fly well, you know how to repair and setup your Belt, and you're sure you're going to stay in the hobby, then spend the money for a good computer Tx.
The main problem with a computer Tx for a beginner - It adds another layer of complexity to trouble shooting when you have a problem, you'll never be sure if the problem is your setup of the heli or if it is a programming error in the computer Tx.
Finally, the precision and accuracy of the computer Tx won't be noticeable with your stock Belt due to the "slop" in the linkage and the loose tolerances in the stock head.
When you can fly well in all orientations, and you can fly circuits with no problem and you're thinking about getting a more expensive heli, and maybe start learning some aerobatics and inverted, then the money for a good computer Tx would be well spent.
In the mean time, the stock transmitter set properly, with a well setup Belt, will do just fine while you're learning.

I don't think it is just due to low battery.
I think you are flying in winds too strong for you. The wind will take it up quite high even if you are hovering with low throttle input.
Also, if there is a gust of wind, because the belt cp is quite a small helicopter is will get blown off corse. This will make it seem like you are getting responds that you haven't given but actually it is the wind.
This is the reason why I am getting a bigger heli. The winds are just too much for me too handle with the belt cp.

The thing is that I notice this even when hovering indoors - and its not just getting blown off course. Sometimes the throttle dips (and stays dipped) quite significantly. I can tell from the pitch of the motor. I'm familiar with the additional lift a gust of wind causes, and this seems to be something else.
I've just picked up another set of batteries for the TX so I will head to the carpark soon and give it another go and report my results.
I do notice that the TX gets pretty warm around the area of the crystal - normal??

The heat is normal - all my Esky transmitters used to do that.
I agree with the battery theory. There's no interference protection at all in the way the stock transmitter communicates with the receiver. The receiver can, and will, respond to any radio noise and competing signals that happen to fall within its channel. When your batteries are low, your signal is weak and may be overcome by interference sources you would not normally notice. I was consistently getting glitches like that every time I tried to squeeze one more flight out of my batteries. I quickly learned to replace the batteries before the last green bar disappeared.

Get some rechargables or your battery costs will quickly out weigh your repair bills.;)
Actually i'm remembering seeing a mod to put a nimh battery in the stock tx. I think you just pull the wires connected to the metal clips and reconnect them some how to a adaptor that would fit. But can't remember where i saw it or how it was really done.

Better yet, use a small 3-cell LiPo so you can use your existing charger. All you need to do is solder a suitable connector to the two metal tabs inside the battery compartment.

Oh yeah - that looks like the buiness - I will be doing that. Is that a regular esky 11.1v lipo? If so how do you hold it in the battery case?
My flight today with the fresh batteries was better, though it didn't last too long courtesy of some wind, an overhead fire sprinker in my condos's carpark, and a not-so-gentle descent to the concrete below which somehow bent my tail blade main shaft.
Still, its all fun and I'll live to fly another day.

Cool Mika! I never thought of that. Thanks!

That's an Esky 1000 mAh 11.1 V. You won't be able to use the battery cover for most 3-cell batteries, but there are two conveniently spaced tabs inside that will hold a rubber band... Or, for a more secure solution, you can cut some new holes in the plastic to hold a hook-and-loop band. Works great, lasts a lot longer than regular batteries, and the velcro is actually way more secure than the original battery cover ever was ;)
Heli Yea!

If your going to do the battery mod this is the battery you want this will fit inside your Tx with the cover on!:thumbup:It also comes w/the JST connectors you'll need to do the mod! http://www.helipal.com/hyper-lithium-11-1v-1600mah-high-capacity-li-po-battery-for-esky.html
