I wanted to convert my axe cp tail rotor to the new direct drive type. I purchased the new V3 tail prop and motor mount. Installed it and soldered the wires. Prop spins the right way but doesn't seem to hold! Tried to adjust gyro gain but no improvement. Tried everything that i could think of. With the stock gear type system the heli works fine. Just wanted to do away with the gear and large prop. Any Idea's?

I have NO experience with the new hardware you bought and your description of "does'nt seem to hold" is not too detailed, but... here are some thoughts:

It won't hold...do you mean it is pushing nose right?

If so,

The old set up used [gear] reduction to lower the tail rotor (TR) RPM (as compared to the new). The new TR might be spinning to fast and thus pushing nose right.

Maybe the 3 in 1 board is different for the V3 too? (just a thought) The V3 3 in 1 might bias the TR motor differently.

Have you tried adjusting the bottom pot? (tail trim) IF I recall, CCW should be nose left.

If it is not a nose right problem, the issue may be the opposite in terms of motor speed biasing.

How does the pitch of the new tail rotor (TR) compare to the old TR?
This might help in understanding the root cause.

I didn't think about the new V3 board, that might be it. Yes the nose of the heli goes left but if I give it full stick to the right it starts to recover then the torque pulls it back left and I also tried to adjust the 3-1 but still no results. At least the heli does automatic piro's.. LOL. I'll try to give tower hobbies a call to see if they can help...I hope someone else that tried this could give me some answers....

OK 808,

Nose left would indicate insufficient TR RPM.

ASSUMING all stock components are functioning nominally, and you are using the SAME MOTOR in both cases, and if the stock TR [gear drive] configuration still works... the 3 in 1 board (being in some way different for the V3) seems the most likely cause to me at this time.

FYI: I have 6 mos. (tail-in hovering & limited FF) experience with a stock AXE CP-L (except for the Tx, Rx, and servos but that should not come into play given your described problem(s)).

Good luck to you.

Please let all know your ultimate solution.

Thanks Von for the help.... Like a dummy I didn't take notice that there is a specific way the tail rotor has to be mounted. The blades are the same but after researching I found the right way it supposed to be mounted. What a difference! It is definitely worth upgrading to the V3 tail system and you would only need to but the prop/motor mount and maybe a new motor if you can't remove the pinion. Thanks again for the help and I hope this will help others that tries to convert to the V3 tail system... Also the Lipo and new bell-hiller upgrade is wonderful and cheap! If need, here is the linkto the photo of the new tail system.

Great!

I never would have thought the (your) rotor blade was assembled backwards!

That's what I get for assuming.

I will likely "up" mine to V3 (DD tail, BH head) along with full separates, but not until it's necessary (part failure).

For now I am "struggling" with [enjoying] the AXE as-is knowing [hoping] this "pain" will pay off later. Actually, I can TI hover quite well in my 2-car garage as long as my 3 batts. last (5-6 min.) but am limited to chest high altitude due to the 8' ceiling and other stuff hanging (door opener, etc.).

I will have to eventually send in my EF 950's for the 910 recall replacements but am continuing to "abuse" them for now knowing I'll get new ones soon!

Mahalo...

:happyd .... I abuse all six of my heli-max axe cp'z.. Noticed the difference in forward flight and also TX input response when I installed the bell-hiller kit..I use these models for practice/play... then bring out my trex's.....I relay like flying my Titan Raptor 50 because its stable..I also have a blade 400 that hovers well and the parts are cheap. I think it cheaper than buying my replacement parts for my E-flight blade cp pro! Well Happy Flying to all...
