Saw this listed on MA's website a while back. Anyone have an idea of what the street price will be and what's included in the kit?

Hi Scoty,
From what I understand it will include every thing needed to transform an Extreme into an Ion-X including Motor and speed controller. I think full retail is like $1175. Is that right? The street price will be some bit less then that I would think. :)

Hey Russ,
I'm trying to determine what comes in the conversion kit and what parts need to be reused. I'd hate to have to split the frames to get at stuff and it would be nice if I could swap the head and tail from one to the other. If I didn't have a budget, I'd just buy an Ion kit!

Sorry Scoty,
That aint going to work, you will probably be using the BB blocks, complete main shaft assembly including main gear, swash, wash and head, bell cranks and on and on. There aint going to be much left of the Extreme when you get done. :|

Yeah, figured that would be the case. Thanks!

Okay, I want to do this conversion now! I haven't been flying the Fury much lately and want to do something to renew a bit of interest in it for me.
Are the conversion kits out yet? Has anyone done the conversion yet?
I have a older, but in perfect condition, Hacker B50-16XL motor. I'm hoping I'll be able to use this? Thoughts?
I'm thinking the 55T counter gear might be a good option for me as well. I run 1850 rpm with the 90 and that's plenty.
What blades can I run? I have SAB 710s now...is this going to be too much?
Thanks!

Hi Scotty,
The 55 tooth gear is definitely the way to go! As for you motor I don’t know, if it’s the same motor at least on the out side then it would probably work, the changes are subtle from what I understand. I think 710 would be a bit much for me, depends on what you’re doing I suppose. Don’t know if you can get it yet. Give them a call or maybe Chris will answer you hear :)

I don't get why the conversion kit needs to be so expensive... unless everything is different. In which case, it's not exactly a conversion kit... more like an incomplete, full-kit.
Might there be a way to simply mod an Extreme to make it electric without replacing everything that isn't exactly the same as an Ion?
Couldn't you just remove the engine and the clutch assembly and install an electric motor and fly? Yes, it wouldn't be an Ion exactly, but it would [should] fly.
I have this unbuilt Extreme... The conversion kit sounded like a great idea, but wow!

Hi Mark,
Yes you could make your own conversion by simply installing a motor in your fury, it has been done with Furies, SEs and P-Max that I know of. Problem is that the Ion has gone through a major diet so that the weight of the batteries would not be a penalty Your Fury with motor and batteries will weigh a bunch moor then an Ion, this amount of weight will result in considerably reduced performance. The other problem is that the Ion’s power system as it is requires a two stage gear reduction to accomplish the best balance of power and efficiency, I believe that the current one off conversions that people have done are using single stage reductions with out runner type motors, from what I understand this works but is far less efficient which is why the Ion uses what it does. So it can be done but if you want the performance people are raving about with the Ion it will probably be a very difficult task if at all possible. Remember to that the cost of the conversion includes the motor and controller witch are very expensive no mater the brand or where you get it from. So what is the street price on the conversion anyway?

Ahh yes... I should have guessed that part about the weight issues. Thanks for shedding some light on that, Russ.
I took a quick look at my favorite online MA dealers and none showed the upgrade kit as available. So I'll maybe give one of them a call and find out about that street price.

Hi Mark,
Just recently got done doing the conversion. The base conversion kit (no motor or controller) is about $470-480 or so. Any MA dealer can get the kit for you. I forget the part number but, if in doubt, ChrisS here can help with that.
I tried to keep the costs down as well, so I used a Hacker motor that I had from a previous project and I'm using an inexpensive Hacker Master 48-3P controller. The controller supplied by MA for the IonX is better, but I figured I'd use what I have on hand...it works fine.
Flies great!

I talked to Chris a few times about this, he's got the stuff at MA to make a converstion kit. Either order through MA directly ($$$), or your favorite dealer. He told me he could ship one out at any time.
