I HAVE HEARD THAT MANY GUY ARE BUYING THE METAL GEARS TO UPGRADE THE NYLON ONES IN THE JR DS285 AND RETURNING THEM CLAIMING THEY DON'T FIT. I WILL ADMIT THE LAST SPROCKET IS DIFFICULT TO PRESS ON BUT SHOULD BE DONE IN A BENCH VICE. THE FOLLOWING ARE A SERIES OF PHOTOS SHOWING THE PROGRESSION OF THE JOB. I AM GLAD I CHANGE MINE (ALTHOUGH WISH I HAD BOUGHT THE SERVOS WITH MG'S IN THE FIRST PLACE AS THIS WAY IS MUCH MORE EXPENSIVE.

Chopper Patrol,

Excellent thread and photographs.

As one who has replaced many sets of the plastic gears-thank you.

I do have one question with regard to how you supported the bottom of the motor when you pressed the final gear on. Did you remove the motor to support the bottom of the shaft?

Thank you.

No I didn't support the motor, I suppose I got lucky. After I did the first one I decided to put some lube on the other servos I did and this helped a lot. I'm certain I have saved money by this point in time, not having to change out nylon gears due to even mild mishaps.

Yeah, I wish I had the MG set as well, but they weren't out yet when I bought mine.

Nice post - I'm sure it'll come in handy down the road. :o

You need to grease the gears.

You need to grease the gears.

Thanks for the tip, but I was simply referring to putting grease on the last MG center hole that has a nylon insert to make it easier to push on. Otherwise it is very difficult to get the last gear on. Again thanks for letting us know that the gears also need grease to add life to them. :)

i recommend using a dead servo to press/size the hole on the main gear first to prevent damage to the curcuit board in the servo.

I just realized that my question was foolish (only took 24 hours or so). The final gear must be pressed onto the potentiometer shaft, not the motor shaft.

OK, so I'm a bit slow these days...

Great post. Just wanted to mention the one gotcha that I found. When I ordered the metal gears, I forgot that the final gear was going to require a different servo horn screw... the plastic final gear comes with a course thread screw. The metal final gear requires a fine thread screw.

Your quite right. It's surprising they don't come with the gears. I bought some at the local specialty hardware store where I got some SS ones. I do like the MG though.

You need a different screw??

Boooooo. :FThat

Well that made my decision. If I need to buy three 10cent screws to complete the combined $60.00 metal gear mod, then I may as well stay with Nylon gears. :YeaBaby:

For that price they should be pre greased, delivered to my door by the Bud Camp Girls and free screws all around.:woot
