It's going to be interesting to see how it plays out. I'm just glad to see another player in the top performance end of the 550 sized helis.

As far as the 800 different options on the head I think realistically the number is far lower. How many people are really going to choose the super stable setting on the grips vs the super nimble settings on the mixer arms as an example. That said there are still alot of options on the Outrage flybar'd head.

Now throw a Vbar on either heli and you have umpteen million different tuning options:lol:

Just asking..... When you guys are figuring these possible comparisons are you comparing a Flybarless to a flybared heli?

I see what your saying, and yes most people will fall somewhere in the middle or faster side of the settings, but don't rule out the noobies that are just learning to get the heli off the ground into a hover. These guys will want steady and stable all the way. This heli will accommodate the most insane flying styles all the way to down to a brand new pilot. As the new pilot increases his skill level his heli can grow with him. Awesome!:YeaBaby:

Shawn would never sell any of his Mikado's. Right, Shawn? :)

No sir, but I am always very interested in trying new things and new helis, I have a OR550 coming, "I gotta know" it looks to be a good heli and will be a great contendor to try against my setups for certain. ;)

Why did it not work well? I will be using a 4025-630 on 12S. I just do not see how this will not work as well if not better than a 1400KV motor on 6S. I will be geared just as deep with a 12 or 13 tooth pinion, should work like a champ. The biggest problem will be main gears if you try to extract full power out of it. But that is not my plan. With the bearing in the motor mount, shaft flex should be non-existant and that is a big factor in main gear life. The biggest reason I am using this setup is I have all of the batteries I need. And if I am going to use two batteries, might as well run them in series. :YeaBaby::YeaBaby::YeaBaby:

Ok I'm going to set up for 6s because I already own a logo 500 and I've got 6s x 5000mah batts laying around everywhere. (lol ok 3 of them).

Motor: Scorpion HK-4020-1390
Pinion: 12t Mod.7 5mm
Esc: Jazz 80 with heatsink mod (I also use this on the logo 500)
Battery: Outrage 6sx5000 25c
Cyclic servos: DS8717's
Regulator: Kiwi pass through regulator (8v swash, 5v tail)
Gryo: Spartan DS760
Tail Servo: DS8900G
Rx: AR7000
Rx batttery: 2sx2000mah Kongpower
Main Blades: BBT Maniacs 553mm
Tail Blades: Rotortech 92mm

Billy, are you building this with the same components you are using in your Logo or are you using the components from your Logo? It'd be interesting to hear impressions of the two birds based on identicle component setups.

No, the Logo setup is similar but not identical. I am using the plettenburg orbit on the Logo. And the 8717's on the logo are running at 6.8 volts through a Scott Gray regulator. But yeah the setups should be close.

Also the logo is flybarless, so that will change things a bit too. I like the Outrage because I can fly it with less fear, due to $$$$ crash costs on the logo.

I also have a Logo 400 under the tree. It's been a good year.

I hope the Jazz 80 will be alright with the scorpion. Helidirect was recommending the Jive 100LV for 6s. I don't see why. The scorpion can only do 90 amps max. The Jive is huge money, plus I don't have the kontronic program card II.

It'll undoubtedly be easier to cool off the Jazz on the Outrage since the ESC won't be stuffed up inside the canopy.

I'm thinking of mounting my ESC on the back gyro mount.

I was just wondering if I'd be better off with the Jive 80 instead of the Jazz 80. Kontronic intimates that the Jive 80 can handle 80+amps without a problem, giving the impression that the rating is very conservative, which is a positive since the scorpion can draw 90 amps continuous (I like to match things up as best I can). I've just heard alot of murmuring about it not liking certain motors and having some early firmware issues....

It costs the same as the Jazz, but I would have to pay to the additional $$$ for the prog card II.

Decisions decisions....

Have anybody popped a Castle HV 85 on one of these helis? I have one ready to go in mine but had a failure recently with one. It will probably be an ESD issue as it was on a 620 Raptor but it was 60f when it happened. Ive never ad a problem with castle ESC's before and am running 5 of them now. I hate to not ave faith in my components...cause I sure cant justify faith in my flying skills:YeaBaby:

I got a chance to test fly the Outrage 550 on 12S. I have a kidney stone that is killing me or I would have done more testing. This is the first day since the Orlando event that I was able to make it a few hours without pain meds. My set up is as follows:

2 6S 2500 30C Outrage packs in series
Scorpion 4025-630 Motor
CC HV 85 Speed Control
12 tooth pinion
11 of pitch
9 of Cyclic
Mikado Vbar
2000 Head Speed in Gov mode

I set my timer for 3 minutes to get an idea of my flight time. I flew a mild 3D flight, rolls loops and some piro flips and a few tic-tocks. This set-up gives great power and it pulls through manovers really good. Here is the kicker I put 700Mah back into the packs. This will equate to about 8 minutes of flight time which is amazing. The motor was 112F and the batteries and speed control were at 90F on both. It was about 78 degrees in Florida today.

I want to take a second to thank Gary Wright for the crash course in electrics, I hit this set-up the first time and it would not have been possible without Gary's help. Belive it or not Gary says the headspeed is a little low to get the motor into the sweet spot of the torque curve. I will try increasing the head speed in 100 RPM increments until I find the sweet spot. Gary was saying that the increase in head speed will make the amprage spikes during high loading smaller, which MAY make my flight time even longer. I am really glad that I did not let people talk me out of using 12S, it is great and I will continue to use and recomend this set-up.

What is the weight difference between your 12s packs, and an Outrage 3700 8s pack?

HeliDaddy
12-21-2008, 10:43 PM
The 8S is lighter by 60 grams.

Mike

JustPlaneChris

According to the Outrage site, the 6S 2500 is 388g. The 8S 3700 is 725g, so 51g difference.

HeliDaddy

But when you put velcro on all the batteries and deans connectors then the difference is 60 grams. That is what my scale says anyway. You have to remember that the two 6S 2500 packs have twice as much velcro and an extra deans connector.

Well damn man that stuff adds up quick.:happyd I am super freaky when it comes to weight. Like the Align 2 in 1 regulator, great item, works great, but I will never run one. I refuse to fly my glow starter, I just cant do it.:YeaBaby::YeaBaby::YeaBaby:
