View Full Version : Listing heavy right and not a lot of lift suddenly

Flew my belt cp the other day... she flew fine... recharged the battery, went to fly it again and the thing wanted to bank heavily to the right immediately... and the lift is just not there... I had it up to probably 65%+ throttle before it would even lift at all, much more throttle than I've ever had to on a full battery....the swash plate looks straight and level on all angles......... when I put the blades out to the sides of the heli it almost looks like to the naked eye when they are stopped that the right side is a little HIGHER than the left by a bit......I've not changed/loosen anything... just normal transport/carrying and sitting the heli down.... never crashed it.... could the pitch on one side slid out of whack after only 10 flights? Would that cause the tilting right and lack of lift issue?
Suggestions on what to check?

Did you bump any knobs or trims?

First thought is to check the rear servos. (Don't forget to unplug the motor!) Pop the links off the servo arms and hold on to the arms while testing to see if you can feel any skipping. Sometimes the bad servo will twitch back an fourth with no load on it. You might also notice that one of the servo arms isn't at the proper 90 degree angle.
The stock Esky servos failing suddenly is pretty common.
Another thing to check is the Hov.Pit knob. As it is turned counterclockwise it flattens out the pitch and increases headspeed and that requires a little more throttle to lift. It wouldn't cause the right bank, but could result in the need for more throttle.

I never paid attention to how much the servos actually move back and forth but the servo on the right side of the heli, controlling the rod that goes up to the swashplate (the one on the back right, of the 3) does not seem to be moving hardly at all.... the minimal movement in it looks like it might be from the other 2 rods moving the swash plate as I push the right stick around in different directions........ it should move back & forth as much as the servo on the other side correct???
Could this mean it died possibly?
If it died, should I buy another stock esky digital servo or another brand?

When you move the cyclic (right stick) forward and back the movement of the servo arm is very small, around an 1/4 inch total.
Moving the cyclic side to side will cause a larger movement, about 1/2 inch side to side.
But you really have to pop the links off the servo arms to check as the rear servos are connected by the linkage thru the swash and the good one will move the bad one.
If you need to replace it, TowerPro SG90 servos are much better for not much more money. Many of the guys here are using them instead of the stock Eskys.
I’ve had the same problem with the stock servo’s. I’ve replaced 3 of them now in my Belt CP and one of them actually died during a preflight check. The 3 that died suddenly where the new digital servo’s and I’ve replace them with the older 8g servo’s and so far have not had any trouble. I would be interested in upgrading to a better servo though. Does the TowerPro SG90 servo move in the same direction as the Esky servo’s as I’m using the stock radio? I’ve heard of other servo’s moving in the opposite direction. You can reverse the servo direction on the controller but I’ve heard then you have a problem with the collective pitch going the wrong direction.

I just plugged it back in and watched the other servo... if the other is moving say in a range of at least 90 degrees of movement... the one I suspected as bad is not moving hardly at all... maybe a few degrees and I think the minutely noticeable movement is just as a result of the linkage connections to the swashplate....... it must be dead eh? The movement SHOULD be very noticeable in a range both ways collectively covering at least 90 degrees. :bawl
Is there any issues with those servos you recommended in a belt cp like GCK asked about?

I've got the SG90s on a couple of my helis and they're a straight replacement for the Eskys, I haven't had to reverse anything.

would I need to replace all the esky digital servos including the ones still working so they were all the same? or could I just replace the dead one?

If you're using the stock Tx, you're probably better off replacing them all so the servos all have the same response time.
If you can only afford one, I'd take the tail servo and replace the bad one with it, and then use the SG90 for the tail.
That way all 3 servos connected to the swash are the same and having a different one on the tail won't cause any problem,

I think I maybe suffering the same problem, but with front elevation servo.
I sorted out the throttle problem and can get a nice hover and control (!) in light gusts of wind :badair:, but last night a problem seems to have appeared which I think maybe a bad servo, but on the front elev.
When I push right stick forward the heli should move forward. It does slightly, but I also (think) suffer loss of pitch and the heli always starts sinking back to the floor from any hover upto 6ft. (I already replaced 3 with stock one's after 1st crash).
If I pull stick back (to level it before hitting the deck) then go back to mid-stick, the heli levels out and starts to lift again?
Anyone think it's same problem with servo? I am hoping to add some of these SG90's to my order on Monday (payday ) so thankfully, it won't be to long before I find out!
I fact now I just written all this, why don't I get off my A*** and pop the links off and check it!! That's one thing I learned from this thread after all..................

Yep it's the servo/s. SG90s are the way to go! Mine are on the way! Esky servos are :BSS don't replace them with :BSS.

Guys, just think of it this way. If one of the servos is moving slower than all the other ones then that means you have a borken servo and you have to buy a new one.
If I had one damaged servo to the swash plate and I wanted to get a diferent type of servo (e.g. TP sg90's) then I would get all of them.
There's no point risking buying one and having two other servos to the swash because different brands perform differently and you don't want that on the cyclic because it would be messed up.

I've just had it up on the kitchen table and noticed the front elev. linkage rod to the swash had popped off, not forward but back onto the stand-off part of the ball link.
Hopefully, it explains the ability to get some elevation movement, but loss of pitch? I think.
It's raining (for next few days according to forecast) so can't go out and test the theory yet. But I will test it before and after the servo mod...
To pass time I think I'll go add 4 x SG90's in my 'basket'...!

LISTEN TO JOHNNY!!!!(all 4 or or none) I'm replacing all 4 originals even though they all still work fine (WHAT????THEY STILL WORK???) Flying w/stock sevos, it's just too risky! But if you put these servos on a lama they are perfect for it.

I'm on your wavelength....4 x TP SG90's!! :Bang
I don't have it on my signature, but I got a Twister Medivac (can be viewed on my profile listing) It's a mix-up made from Twister Bell, Medivac and Lama Shaft/Blades!! So I even got somwhere to stick em when I replace em next week.
Here the order so far...
2.4G Spektrum 6200 (so can fly it with DX6i, and ditch the stock Tx)
4 x SG90's (ditch the dodgy stock one's)
T-Rex skids (snapped one because of the pitch control problem)
Stock Belt
Stock Belt Pulley Shaft (I have stripped two of these so would prefer to get an upgrade)
Any suggestions???

Nice one MN...!! I may follow in the future. Are we turning this into a co-ax thread then...hehe!
Any ideas about upgrade for the CP 'tail driven gear set'?

No, but lots of the guys here started on co-axs and lots us still fly them when we can't get out with the Belts. :)

Have added Twister Medevac/Lama hybrid to signature...:noteworthy
I learned to fly with it and still do, great fun but no 3d. Just found out about the extended shaft too, can't wait to get one!!

Yep, I started w/a Lama and I still fly it a lot! Just cause I got a better heli doesn't mean I stopped liking fun!:) I love my Lama!

I managed a flight in the backyard (inbetween showers and gusts of wind:wow2:) managed to get the steady hover back without the dive-bomb effect....next week before the new servo's arrive though!

So let me get this clear CB. You took a shower, flew the heli, then took a shower?:lol:LOL
Ah, just yankin' your chain! Congrats on your squeezed-in flight.
