View Full Version : Increase yaw rate?

Hi guys,
I have a GY401 on my hurri with digital Futaba servo. All the rest of the tail control is stock that comes with the CF version.
I flew about in the park behind my house yesterday, and this was the first time my EP550 had a videoc amera pointed at it.
On reviewing the video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3L_dfc3coxE (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3L_dfc3coxE)) I notice that one reason I battle on my left side (Heli has past me from right to left, and now I want to turn 180 degrees to come back...), the helicopter seems to take a lot longer to yaw to the right...
However, it seems OK when the heli is to my right, and I do a 180 to the left to come back.
I saw a chaop a while back hovering, and his heli yawed super fast. Now, I'm maybe a bit terrified to push the rudder stick enough... My first crash with my 450 was due to a mistake off to my left, and I get nervous when it's that side of me... but, maybe I should increase my yaw rate.
What's the best way to do that? Is it a case of upping the EPAs for the gyro on the TX?

If you have any expo in the rudder you could reduce that....but remember the heli is always trying to nose left...and the tail rotor is counteracting the torque....when you want to turn the heli nose right....the tail rotor fights to make it happen....when you want nose left the tail rotor relaxes and torque takes over.
Also....most people get more comfortable on one side and turns are easier....the hard part comes in always practicing figure 8's and fighting to alternate turns....
It just comes easier with practice and more flight/sim time....that's really the fun of helis....it's always a challenge.... unlike planks that just fly themselves...

Thanks.
No expo on my rudder, but you're right... One side I guess is easier for the heli to turn than the other. Also, you're right in most people prefering the heli on one side. I battle with the nose pointing to the right... I'm not stable at hovering with it at 90 degrees to the right. To the left, I'm OK... Wierd.
ALSO, I agree with the challange. When I started with helis, and still today, I've always said to myself and other that I have NO interest in hovering upside down, tick tocks... all that stuff. I love heli's in their natural orientation. The furtherist I'd like to go is a loop... maybe a barrel roll.
I still feel that way, but then I wonder.. what if I master that, it it becomes easy. It will be like driving a car. I enjoy it, but as it's no challange - I don't do it for fun.
So, I have fear in my heart! :) Will I be pushed into one day trying to hover inverted. Right now, no... but as you say, the challange makes heli's fun.
I read an artical by Szabo, where he said that when he first learnt, he was more interested in 'saving little men, and flying like a real heli'. He's somewhat changes since then.. Still battling to keep a stable hover though! :)

As has been pointed out the heli is always 'fighting' to stop the nose turning left as a result of the torque from the main motor. In most cases the nose left yaw will be more than adequate.
Assuming the mechanical setup for the tail is all correct (full throw both ways for the tail slider) then you should be able to increase the nose right yaw speed (piro rate) by increasing the rudder channel endpoint on the right side in the DX7 - this will allow you to request higher nose right pirouette rates from the 401 IF you have the 'capacity' in the tail slider movement to create more thrust.

I'll look into that, thanks.
When I'm in non-HH mode, if I recall, I do have some yaw at mid stick... So it's not setup 100%... I think it should hold even in STD mode, right? I'll get that sorted first.

Hi Cralis, I reached the point 2 weeks ago where I felt I needed a faster tail response. Like you I find that the heli turns left quicker than right. This is just a matter of getting used to giving more rudder input when turning right - eventually you won't even think about it.
In the travel adjust menu (DX7) I increased the rudder from 100% to 120% both left & right. I guess you could increase only the right but I am used to it now. The faster piro rate makes the tail more responsive - I like it! & I think it's easier to fly.
Cheers

Thanks Greame,
Gonna try that.
Out of interest, how many minutes you getting off your 3200 packs? And what engine?

I am using the Z20 980kv motor with standard gearing & 14t pinion. At 1800 HS I can safely have an 8 min flight. 2000 HS and the timer is reduced to 7:30 min
I use the higher HS when it's windy - better control.
Cheers

I'm thinking of trying to get those Zippy-H 3300 20c packs... I use the same gearing and engine - and run at 1850 HS. So, I should be OK for 8 minutes flight then? Mmm... Very interesting...
