View Full Version : Tail rotor blade grip play?

Hi guys,
I was just going over the mechanical aspect of the heli, getting ready for servo installation, and something caught my eye...the tail rotor grips have what seems like a LOT of play, thrust wise in them. I took everything apart, thinking a spacer, bearing or something was missing, but all appears OK? I have (from outside in) the screw, 2 bearings, and the blade grip, no washers, or spacers.
Looking at the exploded view, all looks to be good...I am guessing that this is normal? The grips have approximately 5-6 mm of end/thrust play.
Thanks as always guys!

Mine was exactly the same. I worried about it until I flew and realized that it seemed to be OK like that.

I should add on the above description, that the blades are actually limiting the travel/play, without the blades in place, I can move the grips far enough to expose the bearings?
Thanks guys!

Piper, yeah, I am thinking that the centrifugal force will take care of it at high RPM's...
Thanks, I was worried I had a problem before I got off the ground!

Piper,
Your location threw me for a minute, I am from Laurel, Maryland, I thought we might be neighbors there for a second! LOL

LOL
I think you are right about the centrifugal force taking the slack out.

That's correct. Don't ask me why it's this way but every Gaui made tail is like that and works just fine.

Yup... you're not the first to post about this one ;-) the simple one word answer is "Microheli" I couldn't wait for a a new tail shaft and so i fitted my one finally and it works better than it looks and about as good as Buzz said it would

Thanks guys, now the next question! In all my fiddling with the tail, I managed (and learned about) to break a tail grip screw off. I got it out OK, and fortunately, ordered a see saw arm set, which uses the same (1.6mm??) screw.
Now, I purposely ordered a "metal parts pack" for the heli, and it has alot of screws and aluminum parts, but it doesn't have any of the 1.6mm stuff in it at all. My question is, how do I (we) get that super small hardware? Is it only available with the parts it comes with (in my case, the tail rotor grips?)?
Again, thannks in advance. Man, those little screws are very fragile, it didn't take much to break the head clean off!! I learned a lesson, and got very lucky that the see saw's come with the same size screw!

Russell Industries stocks 1.6mm machine screws in 3mm length.

Piper,
Thanks for the link. Too bad they only carry the 3MM size, I believe that the tail grip screws are 10MM....
I'll have to do some research I guess!
Thanks, Glenn

The supersmall 1.6mm stuff isn't readily available like the 2mm and up hardware is. Don't worry though after a few more parts recquisitions you'll have plenty. :YeaBaby:

There is a place in Germany called Screws and More that have all different lengths. I just ordered 25 for 4 euros

Also, I measured the length and they are 5mm

I'd double check the size, Im pretty sure they are actually M1.4 (0.3mm pitch), not M1.6,
Im sure the Seesaw bolts are, as the bearings are 1.5mm bore, so an M1.6 bolt wont fit...
You can get M1.4x6mm from here in the UK: http://www.bolts-nuts-washers.com/micro%20fasteners.htm in cap head stainless. be warned they are not cheap tho, about 25p (~50 cents) each in small (under 500!) quantities!

But the MicroHeli tail brade grips does use washers.
Not a "problem" as such, but a pain to fit/install (with 50 year old eyes)

Piper, Dave,
Wow, thanks for the info, I am glad I didn't try to order any 1.6mm screws! I was only going by a post on here somewhere I read that they were 1.6mm...
That link to the source is a great find! I think I will order some as soon as I verify that Piper's measurement is correct. I'm sure it is, I was just guessing on the length.
I think I will order some, even though as Jetleaf said, I will aquire more with crash parts as I break them...
What a great forum! Thanks all who replied!
