Hi freaks!
I have soldered deans connectors successfully to several 3s packs. However, one pack i was experimenting with (bought from hobbycity) didn't come with a deans on it, and the discharge wire is VERY thick. most of the discharge wires ive worked with look half to 1/3 the size of these. Is there a way to thin the wire down/ or do i go crazy with the solder?
thanks,
ken

What is the C rating on the pack. If it is a high C pack with very thick wire then it was probably designed to draw a lot of amps at which point you wouldn't want to use Deans anyway. Deans are really only good for about 70 amps or so. If the wire is really that thick you might be better off switching over to Bullet connectors. Deans work fine on most lower amp draw set ups but once you start pulling a lot of amps they seem to get corroded very quickly and corrosion causes resistance which is the enemy.

If you are dead set on using the deans with the thick wire just pre tin the wire and the deans connector and then solder them together. Make sure you tin the wire good so it is completely covered with solder and it should stick just fine.

The AirThunder 6S packs use 10ga. wire, and I've gotten them soldered just fine. The only thing I changed was on the female connector, for the red/positive lead, I moved it to the outside of the spade instead of the inside where it normally goes. There's not much clearance with 14ga. wire, which is about the limit

A good, high-wattage soldering iron, and a little patience (and a little heat-resistant fingers), and it should go fine.
