I finally have the new 1521-1.5Y motors in stock. for those not familiar with it, the 1521 is a longer can version of the 1515 motor, which is about the same size as a Hacker C50-15XL. I guess if Hacker had an equivalent size it would be an XXL. In my opinion, this is a much better size for the Ion application, and can be used pretty much as a drop-in replacement for the Hacker in a 10s setup.. I think Chris is running his with a 50T intermediate gear. Anyway, it has a lot more torque, due to the lower resistance, and it is very efficient so it runs a ton cooler than the Hacker.

One big advantage of the NeuMotors is that they can be run at higher rpm, which when geared down further, increases system torque and thus, reduces bogging. We have been testing this same 1521 in an Ion on a 12s setup, that spins it up around 47,000 rpm. The torque it generated, however, was too much for the regular secondary gears (we used a 60T intermediate in order to get an overall reduction of 24:1), and we melted a few. Needing something more robust, we replaced the gears with a belt drive, and the problem was solved. Here is the latest incarnation of this setup:

It is really a very simple mod. You just replace the gear and pinion with the pulleys and the belt, and cinch it up tight. We have already completed the initial tests with this setup, and we will really wring it out today. Assuming it pans out, I will eventually offer 12s upgrade packages that will include the belt drive, the motor and, optionally, packs and a Schulze 40.160 controller. I have a bunch of the "pop tarts" I've been holding onto for this reason. They're not yet listed on my site, but they will be later.
I will post a video of today's test later today.
GREAAAAAAT!!!!! I want to melt some main gears.....Please ship an upgrade package to me as soon as possible, thanks!
Cant wait to see the video

Gary,
So I assume you were melting the gears with the 12s setup?
Can you give this setup a run with 10S and the 60T?
I am using the 24:1 for AP work and am STILL waiting for my Hacker to come back from repair.
The Neu is looking better everyday, but I don't want to go from one problem to another if you know what I mean.

Running it on 10S is no problem. It is only on 12s that we had a problem. It'll work with whatever the gears you have now for the Hacker. Head speed will be close, within aout 50-75 rpm.

Hi Gary,
Looks solid Gary. Does it pull as strong as the Actro 32-3 on 10s?
Do you know of any issues when used with the CC HV-110?
Thanks,
- Rob

It has been my experience that on 10s, the 32-3 does better than the Hacker and the 1521 is a noticable bit stronger than the 32-3. On 12s, it is no contest, the 1521 is quite a bit stronger.
No issues with the CC 110 HV controller, other than I think it is a big pile of poo, but don't get me going... :D

I have been running this motor in my 2nd ION and it does have more snort then the 32-3 on 10s
I have about 4 flights on it geared 20.1 and iam still fine tunning mine for 3d but iam liking the power alot and i have had no gear problems
I tried the 3mm belt geared 19.1 and it tore the belt apart in amatter of minutes
I also am going to be doing this on 12s as soon as i get my controller working i will be using the new Tp prolites 4200 6s2p packs

Hey Bobby,
...it's real late so I'm a bit slow on the math.
- at 20.1 g/r I assume you're using the stock Hacker 2 stage gearing
- if so what size sec. gear are you using? (please say 54T) :)
- are you using the stock pinion off the hacker?
- is this a drop in replacement that will save my Hacker Ion from being totally out classed by my Actro Ion?
- which controller are you using?
Lotsa questions - any answers appreciated. I'm most interested in the 10s4p setup 'cause I've got lots of these packs.
Thanks man,
- Rob

Hey ROb me and Chris are using s 50 tooth sec gear and so far so good
and yes iot will drop right in and replace the hacker and yes iam using the stock pinion and iam also using the Hacker 77-0-h best Esc on the market for the $$
I actually built another ION because both of mine had cut frames but i tell you what on 10s4p this Neu is looking reall nice
When i fly my 5s4p5300 packs the NEU definatley puts out more power then the Actro

We tried the 3mm HTD belt drive again, with the 1521 and a 12s setup, this time tightening it more than the first time. Unfortunately, it still didn't hold past halfway up a hard climbout, but what a ride to that point! :D
Well, it is clear that the 3mm stuff won't handle a 4000W climbout, so I guess it is back to the 5mm versions.

I have perhaps a dozen flights on this motor so far. My heli is setup with a Tempest head and 690 blades (like 710's on a stock head), +/-10 degrees. The motor pulls hard even during long sustained climbs. It has never reached more than 160 degrees (no fan) and it uses substantially less current. At 20:1 (50 tooth gear) it does not turn the head as fast as the 32-3 on 9.5:1 but with the bigger disk it seems to have similar burst power and better sustained power. In further comparison to the 32-3, I'd think the normal flier would see a minute or two longer flights using the larger LiPo packs...I do. This motor is by far the smoothest motor I have yet tried.
I really need to gather some FDR data, just need the time. Don't you just hate this get home from work and have 1hr of daylight left stuff? Who's idea was this anyway?

1 hour before dark, try Alaska , it gets dark 3 hours before work is over and its still to cold to fly
Cool Chris , maybe I need a 3rd Ion just to have this setup :smokin:

...I just put my snow tires on yesterday - all you guys suck
Thanks for the all the answers Bobby. My Hacker Ion hasn't seen much sky time this year because of the Actro machine - looks like the tables are about to turn. No fan? - I like that.

No we didnt get no video! I was to busy playing wiht my new 14MZ man that radio is quick wiht the G3  The neu is definately going to be a nice drop in replacement.
Chachin you will think you have a new helicopter wiht teh Neu i have done some comparising wiht my 32-3 and the Neu defiantely has alot more torque
Iam going to try and get some video tomorrow as stated above this time change really has put a hold on alot of things
Chris is suppose to gather some FDR data this weekend as well
Next iam going to do 12s

Well I was on vacations last week, but the Neu motor in my Ion is working well. I have not flown it much at all but that will change this weekend. The first few flights look very good and as Chris and Gary said earlier it is running very cool. I will also try to get some video this weekend, but it depends on the weather :) Been in the 50-60 range here in Atlanta with some high winds. Weekend looks better.
Seems Steve really knows how to build some motors.
Anyways, glad you guys are also having good results.

Nice! Really looking forward to those videos Bobby, Eric... :noteworthy
I've been taking some time off helis (focusing on paying off some student loans; boring). It will be a few months, but when I'm ready I'll be suping up my Ion and Joker :D. Happy thanksgiving, time to eat!

So what are the average run times on the 6s2p 4200's?
What is the estimated cost of the belt and pully conversion?
Looks like one could get this set-up for around $3200(give or take) not to bad for a 90 size electric. The bonus for my job just went up and I have a little more money to play with :D
