View Full Version : Latest Open Tail gears...
Just did an upgrade from the older shaft to the newest shaft. I did remeshed the gears after about 2 gallons on the old open tail. Do I need to remesh this new gears that come with the latest shalf. If I do need to remesh, how many gallon of fuel I have to do it?
Thanks,
x

only if they aren't meshing right or the backlash is too great i think... i haven't touched my open tail gearbox on my new stratus since i built it... i think its when the gears bed in the play increases in the mesh, but if they are the original ones u had on b4.. i think they should have already been bedded in.
good luck with it!

Hi Guys,
In the manual of the new stratus kits MinAir says "as delivered, the open T/R transmission is properly meshed and has no backlash".
Was this so in your kits?
Because if i take a look at the open T/R that came with my kit, i see a lot of free play between the two gears, should this be properly meshed?
Do i need free play between the gears? Or almost no free play and smooth running gears?
Did any of you guys also need to mesh your new open T/R that came with your new kits?
Best regards,
Gio.

you will need to adjust the mesh. You shouldn't have any play at all. If it sound a little rough when you adjust the mesh, it will get smoother after a couple of flights.

The link above explains how to mesh the open T/R gear box.
The gearboxes are assembled and meshed at MA. But it also good to check and make sure nothing has changed in the packing and shipping process.

After about 7 flights with my open T/R gearbox (meshed by MA) the backlash is 4mm as measured at the outermost tip of the 95mm blades.
Is that too much? should I consider removing the backlash completely?
Thx,

I suggest to have the back lash as tight as possible and the gear train still turns smoothly. You really can't measure back lash at the blade tips. There is play in the rest of the system that is misleading when it comes to back lash on the gears. Only way to determine back lash. Hold the input and out put shafts of the gear box. Then twist the input shaft back and forth while holding the output shaft solid. See how much play there is between the two gears. You want as little as possible and the gear train still rotates smoothly. If it will rotate smoothly with no backlash, that is what I would prefer to have.
