View Full Version : strange swinging behavior in wind

i flew this weekend with around 20mph wind, and when it came to stop or close to it from forward flight ,it was bouncing back forth sideways or/and cyclic.

it's a bit difficult to describe, not the complete heli,
the rotor and tail is rock solid and the rest underneath is swinging around.

it's like holding it from the blades and shake it.

any ideas?

maybe its just a 1/2 lb heli in 20mph winds:thinking

This rings a bell. My heli stuff's at home, but when I bought a replacement main rotor hub, it came with o-rings and a sheet of .004 mm paper washers to use if necessary. The instructions said that the fit between blade grips and head had to be perfect, and that if it wasn't, the heli would swing from side to side in a hover. With a gap, it would swing one kind of way; too tight and it would swing another. Might be worth checking.

i notice this only in windy conditions, and only when slowing down from ff/fff ,it doesn't do it in a hover (yet),
if it get's worse i will definitely check it.
good to know though.

I recall the instructions mentioning two conditions -- too loose and too tight. One of those conditions would cause the heli to swing when coming out of an aerobatic maneuver; the other would have it swinging all the time. Sounds kinda similar.

My opinion is, you were flying well before, then flew into 20mph winds..., I think its Micro-turbulence.

I had my run in with this beast near the hedge in front of my house. I crashed the 200, then tested with the 450. I found the 200 is very sensitive to turbulent air, more so than the Gaui 200 to Rex 450 scale would suggest.

I've flown in 20mph straight winds, then I've dumped it in the living room when the A/C kicked on. I think it's just sensitive to disturbed air.

As Surf pointed out, tighten up the head, I think you're seeing normal wind effects, not a setup problem, I'd also bet you were close to something that busted up the breeze a bit as well.

And how dare you fly this tiny little toy helicopter in 20mph winds? Next you'll be embarrasing 450 v2's in competition 3d and setting performance records.

i agree it is sensitive to disturbed/ turbulent air.
especially if an obstacle like a tree is in your flight path and the wind is towards the heli. unpredictable things happen.....
i always fly outdoors, and here it is always windy ,20 mph is average, and the maximum that this heli can handle and still be fun. max i have tried is 30....but the fun part slips away......
