It's too bad my vacation levels are so low. I'll have to see if I can avoid my yearly early spring bronchitis next year so that I'll have enough vacation days to attend.

I just talked to my old man who's in Frederickburg (and is like the Grand Poobah of Oktoberfest there since he leads the band) Oktoberfest is definitely the same weekend and I haven't seen my sister and her kids in over a year so as of right now, I'd say the odds are better than 50-50 of me showing up Friday night, spending Saturday telling lies about my skills and then off to drink WAAAAAY too much beer Saturday night... :)

Just looked through the gallery there. Surprising not to see pics of my old man with his accordion, but I did see some familiar faces there...
Let's talk about it at IRCHA.. I'm sure my old man would love to yammer on about it for hours. :)

Just a little constructive criticism: You might want to consider expanding the contests next year to cover a broader range of skills. It encourages participation by a wider variety of people.

I completely agree and we wanted to do that this year, but we just have not figured out what that could be. Any ideas? The only thing I have seen at other fun fly’s is a beginner hope which I saw at Mayday.
Thanks

The Southern Rotary Classic holds a Novice contest consisting of two events: a timed hover (30 seconds) and a pad hop. The pad hop is also timed, but the scored time is the difference between two circuits of the pads. One point is assessed for every second the pilot misses the mark, so the goal is to get as few points as possible. The nice thing about this way of doing it is the pilot is trying for consistency rather than a head-to-head competition. They used to have head-to-head competitions but too many people were crashing. I won the event last year.
They also do a Target Drop. They have a special bomb release contraption the pilot straps to his heli that's radio controlled. It takes two people: one to pilot the heli and one to trigger the release of the bomb. It's an event that can be done by pilots of just about any skill level and the "bombardier" doesn't even have to be able to fly a heli.

Are there going to be any "pro's" coming? Or any forum members that are good at 3D? Reason I'm wondering is I've been doing the hobby for 5 months and never seen 3D flying in person - only in online videos. I'd like to watch and meet more fellow hobbyists. I live about an hour and a half outside of Austin so I'll probably only come for one day, either Friday or Saturday.

Dylan Richards will be there. He is a very good up and coming pilot. He can really ring a heli out.

We have a quit a few good 3D pilots here in Texas that will also be there, so there is guaranty that you will see some 3D, and some time to visit about all you need to know about helis.
See you there.

Now there is going to be two pro pilots, Dylan Richards, and Jamie Robertson, and we are going to have one scale pilot, and so far we have 20 other good pilots that are far sure going to be there.

I saw them at the Southern Rotary Classic. They were both most impressive.
