View Full Version : Can one good EVO 50 Clutch be made from two bad ones?

I have a bag full of broken EVO 50 clutches, and one good clutch with a bent starter shaft. Since these things are expensive and don't seem to last very long, I thought it might be worth trying to make a good unit out of the parts I have on hand.
Has anybody ever pressed the starter shaft out of an EVO clutch and then pressed in a new one? Can it even be done?

Rob, good luck, I tried it. No Joy. I heated up the clutch and froze the shaft (ouch :) ) ... pressed the shaft back in and presto !!! it still slipped :(
Now, I don't go through them that often though.

What did you use to press out the shaft and press in the new one?

I took a 2X4 and drilled a hole in it. Pushed the shaft throught the hole. Sat the 2X4 between two others and used a punch too gently press (read ... beat!) the shaft out. My dad would be proud ... 4 years of engineering school for this :)
Anyhow, the other clutch had a slipping shaft already .. so the shaft just pulled out. So there I am with a good clutch shoe and good clutch shaft ... just not together :)
After the the heating up and freezing down, they just slid together. Let it sit over night and it still slipped.

I don't have an Evo so I don't have any direct knowledge about the clutch, but have you tried using Loctite 680 retaining compound when you put the shaft back in the clutch. It's great stuff. I use it to retain TT hex adapters on Fury start shafts w/o grinding flats on the shafts and I've never had one slip. The adapter can be removed with a little heat.
BTW if you intend to do much clutch shaft replacing you should invest in one of these available at Northern Tools and, I'm sure, many other places.

Less than fifty bucks.

I'll definitely use some 680 when/if I put it back together. I'm just not sure if I have the capability of pressing out the old shaft.
