So, there was a minor issue where the harbor patrol had to go on a rescue and I really couldn't wait until they came back so... I looked at the tide schedule and figured that it would be at it's lowest point about 4pm this evening. Well, me and my 9 year old daughter spotted it at the same time. It was right at the edge of the tide break.... Now I have closure....

these Outrage Xp's were puffed HUGE! I wonder if they qualify for crash replacement... Had to throw them out because I'm not sure of the safety of those packs..

Canopy, all gears, all cnc parts, landing gear, tail hub, tail fins, fin set, frame and motor all survived with no damage.. Now to open the gyros and servos...

Man that is an outrageously crappy way to go...
I cant imagine how I would feel to see it sink like that.
I think we should start a vote here - I vote that you rebuild it....
Just for the memories sake :)

My significant other told me that if I didn't rebuild it, then she doesn't want to see any other heli in the house.. I almost have to rebuild it seeing that it has been in that salt water for over 24 hours.. i'm sooo amped...

Can't imagine the salt water was kind to the electronics. Flush with distilled water...

look on the bright side... you have a lot of upgrade parts for your new hurri :D I'd pull the motor apart and flush it good with clean fresh water followed by a good spray with WD-40 or some sort of water displacing electrical cleaner.
as far as the batteries puffing, they should be safe and very dead after a nice soak in the salt water

i would definately try to clean up the motor, then check it with an e-logger or such, it should be usable, there are no electronics in there.
Im willing to bet the rest of the electronics are junk, especially when the heli was still on & the water seeped in...
reminds me of when we used to wrap our electronics in our rc cars in condoms so we could race in the wet ...

I wouldn't discount the electronics yet...I've dunked a heli in water powered up and everything survived. Just flushed with distilled water and 90% isopropyl and let it sit for a couple days before powering up.

we used to use balloons to keep our electronics dry when racing on wet tracks. as far as the electronic being on when water seeped in... well.. the water should have shorted the batteries on contact.. BUT, it was salt water, that is going to corrode the electronics even if they survived the crash

Congrats!! I bet with some care some of the electronics might come to life.

Even if the electronics didn't survive.....you have lots of other good stuff.....wd40, claen and re-use...
Like you say , you have closure....and I would rather get my heli back any day then leave it out in the ocean...
Good luck....we'll look for the maiden flight...

Dude...that flybar rusted QUICK! I'd bet all the bearings are rusted badly too seeing as how most bearings are steel. Dunno man...could cost more to rebuild than buy new.
But it's awesome that you got it back. :wow2:

I use the water purifier I got when I was into reef tanks and rinsed all the electronic in a cooler.. I wanna make sure all the saltwater is out and all the internals are dry and re-greased..

everything was rinsed in the fresh water and I'm glad you mentioned the WD-40 because I wasn't sure what to use on the motor..

The motor works.. I just have to put some lubricant or something on it now.. one of the above post mentioned WD-40.. gonna give it a shot later..

They have been rinsed shaken and blow dried. Now I will let them sit for a few days then crank them up..
I knew the motor was ok so I hooked it up to a spare esc I had and a small lipo. It spun up really nicely after throwing a little leftover drops of water it had in the windings..
I think the esc is shot because it has that burning smell.(no, I didn't hook that esc up to a battery). Maybe the lipos spiked it enough to kill the esc and main power and not allow juice to get to the other electronics..

I use the ol' zip lock bags with a little tape when I race on a wet track also..

I have a pretty good feeling as well.. The motor works and one of the cyclic servos work.. haven't tested anything else yet.. I'm gonna wait a couple days..

That was it exactly... i feel better knowing that no one else got it.. (selfish) and that I don't feel like I threw nearly $1,000 bucks in the ocean..

Save the motor and junk the rest of the electronics
Even if you get them to work, are you really gonna risk another crash due to thier almost inevitable failiure? :dontknow
Save all the mechanics you may even be able to save some of the bearings as the steel is of a much higher grade than that used in the flybar. Even then new bearings aren't gonna cost much.
Maybe you should go with ceramic next time as they dont rust!!
So glad you found it it must have been quite a feeling:rolling
Congrats and let us know how you get on

This is awesome! Good job on the recovery, good luck with the rebuild and let us know when you get it flying again!
