Hey guy's:
I bought a 90 Fury at Clints B-Day get-together and never have flown it because the optical sensor wouldn't work right and I couldn't find a starter for it that would turn it over fast enough. What's everyone using to start there 90 Fury engine with? I burnt one starter up already and never did get it to start.

I am using a Hobbico Torque Master 180 using 16 2600 mah nimh cells. Could do with 12 or 14 cells, but I got the 2 8 cell packs at a good price. Been using that for nearly two years now. I use a 6mm hex wand with one way bearing on the starter.
The above system has started OS 91's and YS 91's with no problems.
Why would an optical sensor keep you from flying a model? It is possible to setup throttle curves in the radio. I have not used a governor for a few years now. There is quiet a few pilots that still use throttle curves.

using the Graupner 90, also called Robbe 120 starter...with 12cells.. 10 would even be enough!and using the robbe starter shaft! with onewaybearing! Worgs great for me till now !

I have OS 91 pumped
I am using my Dewalt 18V cordless drill.
My Dynatron with 14 2800 mAh NiCd cells will not turn it over.

Dynatron - 2- 6 cell packs in series for 12 cells. We are using the 3300 mah nihm RC car cells. I charge about 1 time every 2 months.
Matt Botos uses 2 - 7 cell packs out of the same cells. His starter spins faster but also the same results.
The cell type makes the biggest difference. I was using 2400's before and it sucked. The RC car Nimh high discharge cells are the ones you want. It is usually not the starter itself.
Also the Proflex shafts from MA are coming with bushing guides to guide the 1 way now. This has fixed the broken start shaft issues. Most broken start wands where caused by the 1 way bearing being cracked by side loading the start wand. The bushing guides fixed that.

I am using two 7 cell packs in series on a dynatron starter and it turns it over fine. By the way I am cranking a pumped ys 91.

KSJ 90 starter (see RC Helisplus or Run Lund) with 14cell 1800's. Also useful for starting a Mack truck <g>.

I am running a Sullivan Dynatron using 18 cells! (using 3 rocket packs)
It starts everything!!!! with no fuss!
Also using the MA proflex, havent had problems with bearings or anything. It has been outstanding.

Dynatron with two 12 volt gel cells here for 24V. Starts anything. I think it would start a bus if needed.

I know for sure that Matt Botos's starter will start anything. Hell his battery was low in his truck so we rigged the Proflex up to his motor, fire right up. All kidding aside, his really does put out the juice.

The switch on my Dynatron failed using 24V. It welded itself together. Too much current. :arggg: I'm now using a Hobbico Torquemaster 180 with 14 cells. If I'm careful about making sure that there is no residual fuel left in the engine it's usually enough starter.

Eric Larson told me there was a heavy duty switch for the dynatron. I contacted them and for $12 shipped I received a real HD switch.(it basically has 3 contact plates inside it) I was having the same trouble with 2 8cell 3300 NIMH packs in series producing 24v welding the switch together. The HD switch really makes a difference. This thing would start my truck if I had the adapter.

I've heard that the Dynatron can weld its switch contacts on 24 volts, but so far it hasn't happened to me. I do take care to never put the power to the starter without turning through compression once by hand to make sure the motor isn't hydraulic-locked... I think that might cause a big current spike and maybe weld the switch. It's good to know Sullivan has a special replacement if it ever does happen tho...

I have used nothing fancy. Sullivan hi torque standard starter. http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0091p?&C=PCB&V=SUL
Connected to a 12 volt 7 amp gell cell battery.
You may have to loosen the plug for the first few tanks on a new motor. Works great for os 91 and ys 90 motors.
I peak the 12 volt the night before I plan to fly and have not had any problems.
If you cant turn it over you have too much fuel in the crank. Take the plug out and blow out excess fuel.
Pinch off you fuel line after you fly and on the ys release the pressure from the tank.
The proflex started with the needle bearings in my opinion is junk. Get an adapter to use a hex wand and its trouble free.

I'm using the helimax mini starter on 12v/ 21Amp and it will start everything it's connected to..so far.
Other than torquing the housing and locking the switch on, no problems.
It starts YS/OS 91's as well as my YS 80 no problem.
