View Full Version : Power supply slowly dies. Any good highpower PSU to choose from?

I've noticed that when charging a 6s 5000mAh LiPo pack requires quite much amount of energy, maybe 15A, and I guess 20A with a balancer (or I'm incorrect?). My friend had a 20A 13.8V PSU which slowly died and gave less current. This behaviour I also noticed for my modded PC PSU (rated 18A on 12V). At the beginning I could charge at 1C (5A), I now I have to slowly decrease the charging rate in time. Today I had to step down to 3A from 3.5A. I guess a cause for this is that PSU:s don't like to push full power allt the time, just for short briefs of time. Now I've decided I need to get a more powerful PSU, with at least 30A on the rail, I don't want to push above 60-70% (set the limit by feeling :)). I've been thinking about buying another PC PSU because they are cheap, but I know this hardware is not made for powering a charger. I prefer to buy a good power supply of 30A atleast which can be powered on 230VAC. So anyone have any goods tips for where you can buy this type of PSU?

By the way, anyone succeded converting a high power PC PSU for charging 6S 5000mAh packs, and in a long time not had any troubles of decreased power from the PSU? I'm thinking of buying an PC PSU only as a B-plan, but I don't want to throw the money in the water and notice that it will not last long.

PS.
I noticed that according to EU rules for PC PSU:s the current-limit of the 12V rail is set at maximum 20A, though combining 2 rails will give 40A (if the PSU is rated to have atleast 2 12V rails with each 20A), is this rule also applied for standard multipurpose PSU:s? Maybe that's the cause I haven't found any PSU:s with more power...
