View Full Version : Recommended gyro for K3D-N?

Hi all,
I'm about 50% done with my new Knight 3D and was wondering which gyro would be best suited for my bird. While I'm sure the 401 will work ok, I was kinda hoping to get a JR770 because so many people like them. Seeing I have the 401 ready to install, would it be dumb to get the 770? I also like the CY Solid-G, but don't know if I could find one. Thanks for the help!

If you have a 401 I'd put it in... but If you want a better gyro for it then 'd go for the 770. I havent tried the Solid-G yet but I'm going to order one soon. I've been running the Logitech 6100t's on all mine.

401 will last you long time.. only problem apparently is inconcestant piro rate.. so going to depend largely on your capibilities.
solid g works very well .. would be even beter as soon as CYB tests the compass.. apparentley will be soon.(this week)
Spartan vey sweet, but expensive and damn hard to get hold off
put 401 on. fly till you outfly it, then upgrade.. by then there will be about 20 other gyro's out ;-)

Thanks guys. I haven't had great luck with my 401 on a Trex 450 on the piro rates. It either bites and holds like a pit-bull, or loses it really bad (especially high speed reverse stuff!!!). I've heard lots of good stuff about the 770/8900G combo. Seeing I need a tail servo still, I figured I could sell the 401, buy the combo for around $200-$250 and call it even. I would probably still be out just a bit less than buying the servo alone ($109 retail). I doubt the Spartan will fit the bill for me. I've heard they have temperature issues and with it being around 105 @ 8a.m. around here, that's the last thing I want to worry about!
Do you guys have any experince personally with the 770? How about the Logitech gyros?

Well i an not a great 3d flyer so far, but my logictech 6100 is fine. But there is a problem that you might consider. If you break your tailservo ...no problem, you will find gearsets and cases. But if you break the gyro, you wont be able to buy it anywhere without buying another set including a servo. I was a bit upset by this fact but i solved this by buying a spartan for my second knight, (Spartan can handle the logictech servos as well).
I terms of holding tail i like them both, but i have to admit that the size of the spartan is very nice. I fly the spartan on my nitro and the logictech now on my electro. The only real advantage of the logictech is, that you got exact visual feedback because of the built-in display in the logictech.
allready
I dnt think that this helped you much but thats just my 2 cents. And to further distract you; a lot of people fly the 401 just fine so i guess i would mount it when i had one.
greetings

No worries Max. These are all great answers. It is really nice to have more options now (I came in at the time when the 401 was petty much top-dog and had been for some time). The 401 is easy enough to set up, but I just can't get it to hold as nicely as the other gyros I've seen people using. I wanted to know the different brands and their capabilities (namely from people who'd actually used them).
When I bought my Knight, the guy said that the ratios were set up specifically to work with the 401, so I wasn't sure if the other gyros would be overkill. Either way I go, If I do decide to use the 401 on something else, that's one less thing I would need to buy for the next new bird.
One question about the munting. Is it better to have the gyro far away from the main shaft, or right next to it? Thanks again everyone ;)

mounting
not going to matter to gyro where it sits... as long as far away from vibration ... gyro will always see same movement.. 30 degrees left next to main shaft still 30 degrees left 10 miles away. (don't confuse with actual distance travelled, gyro's can't sense that, only work on degree change).
are you having problems with 401 on the k3d not holding, or other heli?.
only experience that i got with 770 is guys at our field love them... simple to setup and no bells and whistles.....
i love bells and whistles, keeps me busy ;-)

That makes sense. I'm having problems with my Trex 450 and my buddy's Hawk Pro. The 450 mostly kicks out on high speed reverse moves. The gain is around 70-72%. If I go any higher it either flutters too much or simply loses tracking altogether and kicks out worse. Going the other way simply makes it mushy and then again won't hold well.
The Hawk simply isn't holding that well to begin with. I've got it up to 82% gain and it flutters a bit every time you give it input and then let go. I'm going to put a bigger wheel on it so more mechanical gain will be induced (I'm figuring this is the main problem). Next flights will be on Sunday, so we'll see how monkeying with it turns out.
I'm still not finished building my Knight just yet. I've got it built, -sans two front servos, tail servo/gyro, Flight pack & V. regulator, and AR7100R RX- so I'm hoping to get it done shortly after my wedding in August, plus I'm waiting for it to cool off (110 degrees plus on most days!)

There is no reason you don't need to use the 401. I fly all the demanding maneuvers, including piro funnels, chaos's, piro snakes etc etc all with a 401/9254. As long as they are set up right, they are great gyros.

OK then, what is the right set-up?

Look at Finless Bob's gyro setup videos. That is properly setup.

I have two Knight, one with Gy 611 and anoother with Spartan DS 760
The gy 611 is very easy for configuration but the Spartan is necesary a Computer for adjustment
I like much the Futaba Gy 611

i like the spartan, you dont need a pc to set it up on the knight as the stock settings work perfectly.

Confirm Ade's post. Spartan is nice and small. I got the cable but did not need it for setup. But i suggest it for future firmware updates.

Spartan for me. It flies like the sim. The tail is very constant(piro) left or right

spartan no contest and who said earlier in the thread it was expensive?? £120 compared to £300 for a 611?? no brainer really

I think they mean relative to the price of either the 401 @ $140, the JR770/8900 combo for around $200. The Spartan runs about $220-$240, plus you still have to get the $40 cable (or the nifty new bluetooth radio module for a hefty price of $120). So at $260-$340, I'd say it's getting up there. You do have a very good point about the comparison with the GY611; half the price and 1/3 the weight! Either way, Spartans are impossible to get ahold of, let alone affording them to begin with. But then again, I've probably dumped more money down the drain on stupid stuff, so I might just take the advice!

no need for the spartan cable. my spartan works very well without having used one.

True, but for the guy who has to have everything........
lol Seems like that's almost every hobbyist though. I'm quite certain that the Spartan beats the brakes off of just about every other gyro out there, but they're still very hard to come by and they are still pricey as part of start-up costs. I think I've seen them available only once since I've known about them and they were all gone in about 4-5 hours!

yup you dont need the spartan cable you can do it all with the rudder stick. If your struggling for a spartan i can get loads, my lhs has about 100 in stock for £120 each and £35 for the flash link and i can get 10% off that too. let me know or i can put you in touch and let you pay and i can help wityh postage

would you really even need the flash link then? Seems like the concensus agrees that the Spartan is the way to, so I'll look into it in the next few weeks.
