I have a Blade CX2 and I am ready to upgrade to say a Blade 400. I bought a Phoenix Sim first &, using my CX2 transmitter 4CH ,I tried to fly the Blade 400, but after several weeks still extremely difficult to fly.
Is it my inexperience or should I be using a 6CH transmitter ? [ not sure what the other 2 CH do]
Any help will be much appreciated.

A single rotor collective pitch heli is quite a bit more difficult to fly than a coaxial heli. It requires your constant attention and a lot of concentration. It will not fly itself without input from you. Stick with it. You'll get there.

not sure how you could be flying a Blade 400 with a 4 channel transmitter
I'll bet it would be hard since you would be missing at least one control channel.
Basically you need at least 5 channels and 6 is even better if you want gyro remotely
The channels would be as follows
Throttle
Aileron
Elevator
Rudder
Pitch
and Gyro remote gain

We're talking about a sim here. I've been flying a T-Rex 600N model with my CX2 radio. The throttle and collective pitch both are controlled by the channel for the collective stick and the gyro is simulated, so the radio doesn't need to provide a gain signal.

I used my cx2 transmitter on phoenix to learn to fly my tree 500.
I started with 70% expo setting on the phoenix settings on the 3D version
After getting fairly competent I started to lower the expo a little at a time until I got to zero.
After about 30 hours on the sim I flew the real trex500. I have 175 flights
with only 2 minor crashes

Thank you , most useful. Perhaps I should be thinking of a TRex 500 instead of the Blade 400, but I will see how it works out in the sim. First impressions are I like the TRex 500 better!
I may be dim but what does Expo stand for and what exactly happens when I apply 75% expo?

"Expo" is short for "exponential". It makes whatever curve you apply it to be either more or less sensitive around center stick than at the extremes. For beginners, it's common to make the aileron and elevator curves be less sensitive around center stick. Some experts like having it more sensitive around center stick than at the extremes.

Definitely get the 500 if you can afford it. Expo stands for exponential. which is a standard mathematical curve like x squared. the curve starts out shallow and gets steep fairly quick. what it does on the radio system is it makes the control softer ( same stick movement equals less servo travel) around center but does not affect the total servo throw. the higher the expo number the softer the center. most beginners tendency is to severely over control the heli (too large of a correction input) so high expo will help you not over control. but as I said before you should wean yourself off of high expo as soon as you can
