-I ask this question to all that read this thread - this is related to the Fury line only.

-How many 3D (Moderate to aggressive) flights have you flown before you needed to perform some maitenance (more then 1hr.)?

We are doing a study/comparison of R/C helicopter reliability.

Any info. would be great,
Thanks,
Jeff

Maintenance should be done periodicaly to rc helis. Every fifty flights I do a complete check up. It usually takes me more than an hour to do so.

before each flight day I check all the bolts if they still are tight....
motor bearing change every 5 gallons
Head dampere change? dunno aint flying long enough for that...
BTW: i'm getting thoes new one peace dampers, how long do they last?

I went over 8 CASES of fuel on mine, with only lubing shafts and checking over critical bolts.
A self induced vibration (overly rich) caused one part to fail regularly and that was the landing gear support (a $10 part).
I wore out batteries, broke a motor, and wore out servos before anything on the machine failed.
The ONLY (almost) problem; the delrin cups at each end of the tail driveshaft wore heavily, but never failed.
BTW; This was a used machine purchased from DavidH, and I have no idea how many flights, or what may have been replaced prior to my getting it.
If poor frequency control hadn't crashed it for me, it'd still be flying instead of sitting on the bench.

how often do you guys change the bearings of your motor?

Only when needed. I have had motors that had 30-40 gallons of fuel thru them with nothing but glow plug changes when needed. I am not going to take a perfectly great running motor out of a heli and change the bearing just for the hell of it.

Can I get a Praise the Lord, Amen?

I dont see the point in taking a perfectly good motor out to change good bearings for good bearings either. Just like sky diving. Why jump out of a perfectly good airplane?

When you have lots of time on your hand, why not!

A rear bearing is almost $25 bucks. So $25 then 2 hours to take the motor out, put it back in + the time it takes to strip it all down, throw it in the oven, change bearings, lube the inside up then stick it back together. 4 or 5 hours work. :badair:

Non crash related part:
1, head spindle =< 100 flight.
2, front channel (sandwich between engine mount) less than 100
3, Clutch damper when perform any engine work.
4, Lube close tail gear box every 25 flight
5 Tail hub about 75 flight (just make me feel better)
6 Flybar on tempest 3D head with old seasaw every =<25 flights.

Other than these, very good machine.

I have a Fury Expert (serial # 0000007) that has 492 flights since last major tear down (crash). I have changed the gear ratio from 9.3:1 to 8.36:1 when I changed the YS 61ST2 to the YS 80. Am planning on changing to the YS 91 and will change to the oversize clutch assembly when I do that. Still flying the same blades, flybar, paddles, TR hub, TR gears, Torque tube, crown gear, clutch bearings, thrust and radial bearings in the head, the darn thing has basically been bulletproof.

Guys, thanks for the reply - its good to hear how others are doing with their equipment.
Thanks,

Most would not believe how many flights are on my machines :) They are very reliable. Some parts failures happen for various reasons on all machines. I think you will find MA to be one of the lowest failure ratios and some of the most powerful and hardest flown machines.

Well Fred, I change my rear bearing every 2 months or so and that is about 8 gallons. If even one flake of corrosion comes off of the rear bearing and goes threw the motor it may damage the sleeve, ring, or piston. I change the bearing for insurance as it is impossible to remove all of the alcohol and lube that bearing completely after every day of flying. Even though the bearings normally look good when I remove them, I can always tell the machine is smoother when a new one is installed. The sound and smoothness of the motor is worth the $ for me personally. The insurance is also well worth it. I ran both of my motors all season on the same piston, ring, and liner assembly with very little power loss. It is a personal decision based on your opinions and experience. Some change the oil in their car every 3000 miles, some 4000, 5000, or more.

Jeff,

I have alittle over 325 flights on my stock G10 Fury Extreme since May with no real problems. I broke a flybar, and blew up my YS, but both times I was able to land safely.

I am now running the OS 91 with the Kline and it is awesome. I just rebuilt my motor, and it is running great.

If you stay on top of everything, the machine holds together. I havent crashed it yet, and everything is still silky smooth and will hold up to pretty much anything I can give it.

If you take your time and build it right, it will last you for a long time.
