I would have thought the motors are made by machines but I guess not..... So what do you think? Would hand made motors be beneficial or detrimental?http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hMCyqyyh5MA

From my experience, manufacturing magnetics (transformers, inductors, motor windings) is a craft. It takes time to train a new employee to do this, and everyone does it differently.

This also appears to be a standard factory in China. A little on the low end as I didn't see any uniforms, just t-shirts on the employees, but nothing out of the ordinary.

I think there will be a higher fallout out, but the end result the customer sees will be very dependent on the quality procedures and the amount of involvement the parent company has in the factory. Even automated assembly will. produce crap if the quality procedures are bad.

Scorpion seems to have a good reputation, so they seem to be doing it right.

Wow... looks like a depressing place to work. They need a little more light in that place and background working music.

I fly a -8 and I'll tell you there's nothing detrimental about hand assembly. I don't know if you've flown one, but if not you should. They're awesome. Very few products are made completely by machines even with today's advanced technologies. I've worked in electronics production for years, and only PCB (printed circuit board) soldering is automated and even then it must be programmed and set up by hand. The rest of the assemblies are done by hand. Why do you think all these companies have moved their assembly plants overseas (like one I worked for)? The labor is way cheaper. Where do you think that video was taken? If those motors were made here they would cost $250 bucks a piece.!

I like this Chinese transfer press. At my work we have transfer presses up to 1,500 tons. we use rails to do the transfering.

When I was racing rc cars years ago , Hand wound motors were the hot ticket, winds were tighter and more uniform than machine wound...

After seeing the videos (yup there is a series showing the factory work) I feel kinda bad for those workers. They don't look very happy doing what they do, they don't even talk to each other. I would have thought they would be using machines to do do this sorta stuff. Kinda depressing....

I don't think they would be that high..... Steve Neu makes motors in CA. and they run $125 for a 450 size motor. His motors cost a little more but they are very nice and powerful. You get US support too. Not downing the China stuff just making an observation.

Music? You must be kidding. The only thing you can't see in that video is the guy off camera with the whip. These factories are like a rowing room. A buddy of mine who went overseas to help set up our factory told me horror stories about how they treat the employees like dirt. They make the equivalent of about $1.50 and hour, but they are given a tiny apartment to live (on site) so they don't have to waste a lot of time commuting home for the week since the factories are usually far from the city and most don't have cars. They're also given a breakfast and lunch consisting of what he says was some fishy smellng stuff he says looked like eels, and a soy-like broth. They work 10 and 12 hour shifts. God bless the good 'ol US of A! I kiss the ground every morning before I go to work. :noteworthy

it's posted somewhere else here but all scorp motors are kits meant to be hand made. If you bought a built one, then the company you bought it from just put it together then re-sold it. building these motors is not a hard or terribly skilled thing, but you can certainly build your own kick ass little motors with a bit of practice...I'm sure somone else will post a link to the home built motor site (that I can't remember right now)...

It's right on the Scorpion site. Check out the "motor building technic/review" on the left. Actually they have their own factory to assemble them.

You're completely generalizing and actually have no idea what these people make or whether or not they live on site.. A lot of Asian people enjoy fishy tasting soups and foods including eel.

Pictured above is our new, state of the art, 377,000 square foot manufacturing facility and engineering center, where Scorpion Motors and Speed Controllers are designed and made. This facility employs a staff of over 1000 workers and engineers, and is ISO 9001 certified. Our factory is also committed to maintaining ROHS (Reduction Of Hazardous Substances) compliance on all of our production lines. We still have a diverse product line in other areas of manufacturing, but RC products are what we really love. We have a long term plan to produce the largest selection of brushless motors, speed controllers and accessory products available anywhere, and our commitment to customer satisfaction is our primary goal.

I listen to the AllThingsThatFly podcast and in the InsideHeli #24 edition they interviewed Lucien Miller from Innov8tiveDesigns.com who is the US distributor of scorpion. He had gone and taken a tour of the Scorpion factory and had all kinds of great things to say about the company and the factory.

You can check it out at http://www.allthingsthatfly.com/ InsideHeli #24 - Lucien Miller Interview around the middle of the main page.

Not to say he doesnt have a vested interest since he is the US distributor. Also I think most of the youtube videos are from his visit.

I emailed the contact address at the factory..
They make more than double the minimum wage.

Here's the response:

Dear Charlie
Thank you for your interest of our employee’s welfare.
Our factory is situate in Zhung Shan , Guan don Provence, China.
The minimum salary of our assembly line staff is 1650RMB/Month, plus 3 free meal a day and free dorms, and free medical insurances, the local minimum wage requirement by law is 780Rmb.Month
44 hours work per week.
1650RMB is equivalent to 242USD, it’s very small amount compared to US salaries, but don’t forget you can get a meal in china for just 40 cents USD, and this salary is income tax free, so the people get to keep 100% of their pay at this level of income,
Most of the staff are from other provinces of china, so they can not go home after work like in the USA, it’s just simply too fare to do so, so in order for them to have recreational activities after work, Our employee’s enjoy free internet café, library, and many other benefits. Here is some photos of how is to work in our production.

The eel I had in Shuzhou, China was the best seafood I've ever had! Didn't know it was eel until after.

Like I said, this looks like an average factory. It's in the major industrial area in Don guan China, about an hour from Hong Kong. Nice place, terribly boring for tourists. Nike has a factory there that would floor you it's so big. I love staying in the 4 star hotels for about $85 a night though!

Many of these employees are from distant parts of China where there is no work. They will choose to work extra hours and live on the cheap. They will support the rest of their family back in their home village.

I will apologize since I was speaking from my own experience and don't know how your facility operates, I will say that at the factory I heard about, other than the wages, which may have changed since I heard back in the late 90's, sounds like the story I heard was for the most part correct according to your own e-mail. Hey, I was exaggerating about the guy with the whip, cmo'n. My friend basically said that it was weird how they work, nobody speaks, it's so quiet you could hear a pin drop! I guess it's because they're disciplined, and we're not used to that! My friend spent a year there and told me first hand what it was like. The factory I speak of is also ISO 9001 certified, ROHS compliant, and unfortunately also cost me my job since most of the engineering and production was moved there. I guess you could say they were ROAJ (reduction of American jobs) compliant.:)
I also have had eel and it was awesome. I didn't say there was anything wrong with it. I am a seafood freak!
BTW, I own 2 Scorpion motors and 2 ESC's, and they are excellent. I'll be buying another setup soon, so your commitment to customer satisfaction is working so far!
Keep up the good work!

My buddy has a restaurant in Waimanalo HI. The people that work for him are all from the Philippines and spoke little english. Man they wouldn't say word unless it was work related.... I asked him about it and he said. "Oh, it's an Asian thing." Everyday around 5:40PM they would start to chat a little then by 6PM the doors would be locked and they would all be laughing and cutting up.

Yeah, laughing at us! We won the conventional war, they're winning the cold war. I believe we have a lot to learn from the Asian peoples, especially the Chinese and Japanese. I was involved in martial arts for a long time and I learned that they are very wise and disciplined. They learn from and are very in tune with and protective of nature and the earth and are very respectful of their elders. We westerners are unfortunately losing many of these qualities and it is leading to our youth becoming degraded and violent since we can't spank our kids to teach them right from wrong! I just don't get it. They will eventually prevail. Something to think about. Respect!!!!!!! Scorpion rules!!!!!
