I have the 19T OWB in at the moment and have a 20T lying on the desk. I bought it after all the issues I saw about the 19T, but the heli is flying really well at the moment, should I rock the boat and put the 20T in? All my other gears are stock and I am flying a Z-power 980.

just for the peace of mind, yes. while you might be flying great right now.. what about the time when the 19T OWB decides to split on you causing you to crash?

Simple answer: YES! before its to late...

Ok, so I have done it, but now I have a squeaky noise - should the bearing be lubed and with what?

Thanks.

some run them dry.. some soak it in transmission fluid before installing it. I just put a drop of tri-flow on it. it's one of those weird bearings.. you know.. one that you WANT to lock up.. at least lock up in one direction.

Is there a HOW-TO for swopping the OWB? I have a new 20T in a nice little GAUI bag, but too scared to change it... Is it simple and safe?

very simple... very safe. if you have 5 minutes to spare... you can get this done...

loosen the 2 set screws that hold your primary gear to the OWB shaft. push the OWB shaft down and out the bottom of the heli. the OWB slides off at the same time. put the new OWB in place of the old one and re-assemble. pay attention to the shims on the old one and transfer them to the new one.

OK, I'll try quick. :)
Do I need to remove the main gear, or can I somehow remove the block under the OWB, by taking out the 4 holding screws.. then drop out the OWB and replace? Because I see 4 screws holding that metal block...

just remove/loosen the set screws that hold the gear to the shaft. then push the shaft down and out the bottom

once the shaft clears the gear, the gear can be removed from the side and the shaft can be removed.. it's really easy once you do it

Sorry - I'm a bit slow. :(
Are we talking about dropping this? (The red arrow pointing at it) Buy removing the four screws holding it in place - then dropping out the shaft and replacing the OWB?

maybe pictures will help.
http://i62.photobucket.com/albums/h119/mysticmead/Hurricane%20550/100_0401-1.jpg take out the set screw. there are 2 of them. they hold the gear to the OWB shaft.

http://i62.photobucket.com/albums/h119/mysticmead/Hurricane%20550/100_0403-1.jpg after removing the set screws, push on the top of the shaft and it will come out the bottom. no need to remove the screw on the bottom of the shaft.

Zoobie, I get the same squeak issue... and I swapped out every isingle bearing in the heli, including replacing the new 20t OWB just in case it was 'bad'... squeak came back after a couple of flights.

My current thought is that I need to remove one of the washers used between the OWB and the bearings - I did not realise that Gaui had updated their instructions to show this 'mod' but they now only show a washer above the bottom bearing (between the bottom bearing and the OWB) - the top washer is no longer used.
It seems that the 20t OWB may be a little taller than the old 19t... wondering if that puts pressure on the carrier bearings. ANyway I plan to pull the shaft, remove the surplus washer, check that the 20t is OK (a little light oil maybe) and I'll probably replace the carrier bearings (again).

Thanks man!
OK, now I understand. @ work now, but will get home and try it tonight.

An that stuff about the washers... So, if there is a washer above and below the old 19T OWB, just use the lower washer with the 20T?

Yes - that's what the latest Gaui 550 assembly manual shows as a "correction"

Well I took out the top spacer and oiled the bearing with some light machine oil. Seems a lot better, but not perfect. I suspect after a few runs it should settle.

One OWB replaced. :Bang

Thanks guys.

Washer at the top only.

NO! :Bang

One washer only on top of the BOTTOM bearing - so between the top of the bottom bearing and the bottom of the OWB.

Agh!! :arggg:
So the washer should be UNDER the OWB?

Ah! This is going from bad to worse now.
I decided to remove the washer, and put it under the OWB. However, I think I must my heli.

I removed the screws holding the shaft in place, then, as I did the last time I removed the shaft, I put a screw driver head on top of the shaft (near the motor) and used the back of another to 'tap' it down so that it would drop out the bottom. Worked OK the first time...

This time, I hit, I think the screw driver moved off the top of the shaft, and onto the bearing. And possibly knoecked the bearing down a bit. Do you know if the top of that bearing in the top 'holder' for ther shaft, should be flush with the top of the mount? Mine is about 4mm down.. the bearing, that is.

I have the shaft out... but have downed tools, as I think I have a problem with that bearing now. And, I can't see a way to push it up, as the top gear is in the way.. :(

Oh hell....

slide the gear out the side and see if you can get the bearing flush. then make sure the bearing isn't screwed up

Cralis

Can it slide out the side? I don't have my heli here, but I think the core of that gear is a bit higher than the slot it would slide out of... I'll check when I get home though, but I seem to think there is a stand off on top of the gear...

mysticmead

yep, slides right out

Cool, thanks man!
Will try it.

Got rather depressed when I did it. So gave up before I messed something else up. Decided to start putting together my Trex500 Torque Tube.... Then, decided to stop, incase I hashed that too.

So, went and made soup - and burnt the pan.

Not a good night! :)

TONIGHT - Victory will be mine!
