View Full Version : Tail drifting fast to the right

Now when I fly my gaui, I have to hold right stick the entire time during flight. The right trim doesn't work, it will work for a couple of seconds and then the tail will start moving right.
If I let it go it will pyro right at about half speed.
Using a 401 gyro, DS75 servo, gyro set to 72% on DX7.
I am worried I have a bad gyro. I check the limits on the tail all good, servo arm is a 90 in rate mode, and tail is centered in rate mode. Tail belt has good tension.
Any other suggestions?
Not fun to fly this way, always adding right nose.
Dan
Maybe I should just through a spartan on this thing, if I could find one. Would a micro heli tail help, I guess not if its the gyro.
Delay is set to zero, limit around 100, using digital for the servo, also using a carbon fiber tail rod. Tail shaft is not bent, brand new, tail drive shaft is brand new. Blades are tracking well, main gear is normal.

If your tail is centered in rate, the heli will for sure turn counterclockwise flying in rate. It sounds like your gyro is not in HH when you're flying. Is the red indicator light on? Do you have the correct (0 or 1) value set for the flight mode you're flying in. I would guess 0=72 1=30 and norm-0, id1-0,id2-0 in the gyro sense menu.
If the above is correct you could have mounting problem, wiring problem, mechanical tail problem, low headspeed, bad gyro
Could you give us a picture of your set up.
Hover in rate mode and adjust the tail linkage (or move the servo on the boom) till the tail will hold. Then shut down, re-initialize in hh and see what happens.

ICCA,
He may get better performance if he sets up for no drift in rate mode with the 401, but the tail will hold in hover on a good working 401 in HH even if it's not set for no drift in rate.

GC This is true, but I had trouble with the 401 in my Beam, and I did this and it settled down. It's worth the try.

Are you sure you do not have some right rudder trim or subtrim? These should be 0. Otherwise maybe your gyro is bad like you thought.

You don't by chance have your belt twisted around itself in the boom do you?

I don't think the belt is twisted. When I turn the main blades clockwise the tail is going counter clockwise, with the blades running leading edge.
I will send some pic of my setup tonight when I get back from work.
Yes check the gyro sense menu, I actually have both 0 and 1 set to 72, and the gyro red light is on.
I made sure again that the limits are correct, and not hitting the tail setup on either side.
I will try the rate mode setup.
I did notice one thing with the wiring, it looks like my motor may have scraped some of the coating off the yellow wire, because I see exposed wire.
I put some electrical tape over it, but I still have the same issue.
Maybe its worth re splicing the gyro.
I think I may try to pick up a spartan, and switch out the 401 on my trex 500, and put the 401 on my 200.
I also have a hitech gyro on my 450, but I am not looking forward to setting that one up again on such a sensitve bird (200), on my 450 somedays my hitech works great, some days it has tail wag at the same rate it worked at yesterday, its a little picky.
My 401 on my 500 holds like a rock, 20 mph winds don't move the tail.
The only other thing I have noticed lately is that the gyro is turning on way before my 6100? Will that effect gyro centering?

Not sure about centering but the range of movement on your tail servo will be affected.

Its fixed.
Un mounted the gyro, placed new adhesive down. Then I place it back in rate mode and got it flying in rate mode.
Then I switched back and forth between rate and hh mode three times to re center the gyro, and now everything works.
Thanks for the advice.
I love this heli when its flying well.
