I was kinda disappointed in my new 8900g when I found out that it had a nylon gearset. I installed it anyway, but now I've noticed that the screw doesn't want to stay in the output shaft. It's not stripped, but the screw won't really tighten.

Does JR offer a metal gearset for this servo? If not, will a replacement set for an 8717 work?

Why would you want a metal gearset for a tail servo?

Are you sure you are using the right screw? There are different screws for plastic and metal gears.

Also, JR sells (ReadyHeli carries them) longer screws for the nylon gears servos.

I would want the metal gearset because I'm thinking that the screw might hold better. Besides, for what those suckers cost, they should have metal gears just on principle :)

I'm using the screw that came with the servo. I would assume it's the correct one, though I may try a different screw and see if that helps.

Well the metal gear servos have a lock washer. You could use one with your servo.

But I have changed all mine over to the long screw. I got started with the DS821s, where the long screw helps support the somewhat weak output shaft.

You don't have the WRONG screw, there is just a better one available.

And I see your point about the price versus metal gears. :) But man is that sucker FAST. :)

Hey, that's a good idea... I've got a metric crapload of DS821s in a box collecting dust waiting for me to finish my Ugly Stick rebuild. I can try one of the screws from those.

Yeah, this thing is a crack-pilot's dream. Actually, the 8717s are insanely fast too. Pull the transmitter sitck over and let it slip free and bounce, then watch the control surfaces flutter. :)

I believe the nylon gears may actually be a wee bit more precise that metal gears. Especially as the servo starts to wear. Precision is very important in a tail servo. If the 8900G was available with metal gears I would still buy the nylon gear version.

This could very well be, and I don't often hear about guys stripping out the rudder servo but like I said, for a hundred bucks you kinda expect metal. I did anyway. The servo works fine and is super fast and very precise so I suppose it'll be fine.

In any case, I pulled the screw from one of my 821s and it appears to be the same screw as the one in the 8900. It certainly isn't any longer, but I installed it in the 8900 and it tightens up nicely and doesn't want to unscrew. I put the 8900's screw in the 821 and it likewise seems secure.

Weird, but whatever works. Thanks for the idea Pinecone!

I CA every screw in nylon gears, not a chance of it getting loose.

The screws that COME with the DS821s are teh short ones. You ahve to BUY the long ones. Like $2 for a pack of 10. Toss them in your next RH order.
