I've read all (well nearly all) the posts on gearing the 550. I have the stock motor and GAUI OK gearing (14, 20, 42, 61). I would like to move up to the Z20 1470KV. But according to the headspeed calculator, if I keep my stock gearing, then even at 85% efficiency, the headspeed will be over 3000! Am I missing something here? It seems I would need a 10t pinion just to get back below 2200. Looking for al ittle extra zip, but not a blade throwing, tail eating, monster. I need gearing suggestions.

change the 42T gear to a 50T or 60T and you'll have lots of options.

change that... to get back down to 2200... you'd need the 60T...and a 13T or 14T pinion.. OR.. just get a Z30 1110.. or even a scorpion 1210 and a 50T

Or the Z20 980kv, that's what I'm running with a head speed right around 2100 in gov mode.

The problem with the Z20 980 Kv is that even though you can gear to get higher headspeed, as soon as you work the collective, the motor bogged down very badly. The bigger the pinion you put on the motor, the worse the motor bogs.

I second Mystic for the motor and gear choice. Get at Z30 or Scorpion 1210 Kv.

Nope, not true. If you are running 2200 batts, ANY motor will bog and if you try to run a Z30 on 2200's, your batteries will die a quick and puffy death.

Check this thread http://www.helifreak.com/showthread.php?t=80986&page=2 and look at the second picture on my post from July 13th at 4:28PM. This is a Z20 980kv running on two 3S 3200 Kong Powers in governor mode on CC Version 1.56. The only way to get noticeable bog with this set up is to have sloppy collective, which I am guilty of, and draw 50 to 60 amps. The Z20 holds head speed very well and if you are bogging it all the time, you need a Z30 with a bigger power system.

If you want 2274 hs go with 15T, 60T front. Same pinion your using now just change to 60T front gear. If you want higher head speed 2365 hs, go with 13T and 50T front gear.

I am running FP3200 EVO30 packs. If you want to hear the Z20a bogs, do fast tail down tic-toc, 5-10 in a row. If your Hurricane does not lose altitude, you have a very powerful Z20 or you are pretty good with collective.

I have been collecting EagleTree datalogs for the RCP H/18 1100Kv, Z20 980 Kv, and the Scorpion 1210 Kv motors on several flights. The Scorpion motor is a much better motor than the other 2. I would have gone to the Z30 motor, but I was not ready to cut a big hole on the top of my FG canopy to accommodate the Z30.

I can eek out 5:00 min on the Scorpion motor at 2300 rpm headspeed.

I would like to move up to the Z20 1470KV.

I'm using the 13Tpinion, 61T main gear as a front gear, 19T OWB and the 61 main gear.
This gives me about 2100 HS. 550mm blades.
