I'm looking for a good canopy painter. The Aurora canopies shown on their site (Jason Bells, etc) seem to have the best looking paint jobs. Who paints these canopies?

I've used CanopyFX before. Their work is very good, but they seem to be very sloooow..

Anyone know of any GREAT painters that don't take longer then 2 months...?

Thanks

The canopies on the site are all DYD canopies. Dave is a great painter but it will take forever to get a canopy. Your best bet would be Arizona heli.

I heard that as well but his website makes no mention of it.

Check out ace heli's as well as anagrafix (sp.?).

They have Dave Yost type canopies.

Dave is out of the business. He had over a 1 year wait anyway. Arizona is good and Ace Helis is good as well. That's about it. There is a new guy that does beautiful work Extreme Canopies but he's falling into the rut Dave did with taking forever or just not being able to take an order.

I contacted Arizona. WOW, great response time AND an exact date when it will be done (about 3 weeks). A lot more expensive then CanopyFX, but if I can get the canopy in 3 weeks, that's cool by me.

We'll see....? I will post results (quality, time, etc)

Thanks for the info.

I only deal with Ace and Arizona. Arizona ships once a month and gives you the exact date it will be shipped. Usually 3-4 weeks. Scott at Ace usually gets it done in about two weeks. Both are extremely helpful and reliable and they appreciate your business (can't say that for many of them).

Sorry demand, you know IRCHA tell me if you can buy a pre-painted canopy?

Thank you very much, greetings

Just FYI, U-Neak Designs is going to be starting to do custom paint. The samples I saw at IRCHA looked like super-high quality. Clear coats so good they look like glass. They seem to have captured a very DYD look to the designs I saw so stay tuned to what they're up to.

Does anyone know what these guys are using to mask off the canopies they paint? masking a curved surface is a biaaatch. Do they use liquid mask at all if so how are they using it?

Most painters I have been around. They use a fine line tape. It comes in widths from 1/8 inch up to 2 inches. The narrower widths have no problem making curves in the design.

Also some of the painters are using a masking sheet and cutting the design out of the sheet. Then applying the sheet and spraying the paint. This also allows nice designs and not a lot of taping.

I use transfer paper or frisket to do all my masking.

Jmoore12, dont you find that the frisket is a bugger on a curved surface?

Somewhat, but I use a little bit of acrylic clear to seal the frisket and it works fine. I also make sure all the little edges and corners are sealed well before painting. I bought a roll of transfer paper which I think will suit the canopies a bit better. Its more of a masking tape material that is in a wide roll, but still low tac.
