Well, I foolishly dropped my Canon A640 in the ocean the other day. (don't worry, the helis are still dry!) I had stuffed it down my life jacket while sea kayaking in order to be able to get at it easily to shoot some snaps along the way. I forgot it was there when I pulled over to pee! as soon as I stood up, it slipped out the bottom, into a soup bowl sized pool of sea water about 6 inches deep. The only puddle in a 10 foot radius!
It was not in the water longer than about 4 seconds, which is apparently enough to completely ruin a $400 camera. Save your breath, I have tried all of the appropriate remedies to revive it. I soaked it in a bowl of freshwater as soon as I got home for about an hour, to dissolve the salt, then dried it out with air and dissident. It turns on, and everything works except for the image sensor. I am still hoping that there is something that is still a bit damp, and it might work after another week or so of drying out, but I'm not holding my breath.
SOo... I have some shoots coming up, and I need a new camera, what should I get?
I also used the canon for shooting time lapse, so I really liked the idea of the CHDSK software to run an interval timer, and my heli is rigged with 3 flysoft switches to control trigger and zoom (I hacked the A640 and soldered leads on for control). But there are smaller and lighter cameras now with 28mm and even 24mm lenses (35 equivalent) they sound pretty tempting.
What are you using, and how do you like it?
Thanks,
