Hey guys, I'm joining the 550 community and just setting up my Hurricane :)
It seems to me (having experience with a trex 450), that the oneway/frontgear and tail drive/rear gear have way too much resistance. My head has no paddles or blades on it yet, but the difference in its freedom between when it is connected to the main gear and when it is floating free is staggering. Right now if I rotate it fairly quickly I get about one and a half turns before it stops. Was that the case for any of you guys? Something to be concerned about? I'm thinking of taking the washers between the one way bearing and greasing them up, but I dont know how much that would do and may very well be masking the problem.

You might have the belt pretty tight or since its new it needs to wear a bit. Make sure the belt is not twisted in side the boom. It will make big difference when the main blade is on.

Some motors have a higher resistance than others, how does the motor spin when unloaded? I had a similar issue on two occasions. One was the OWB about to let loose and the other was the 'stiff' motor. Hope this helps

Gaui now recommends you only use 1 washer on the OWB....at the bottom....so I f you have two...take the top one out...it's a pita to get in anyway....
Also when your gearing things there will be a resistance...just like when you try to manual turn a servo.....
If the the individual gears turn freely, your belt AND gear mesh is not too tight....then what your felling is normal.

I dont have the motor or the belt on yet, so we'll see about that stuff. I did read that correction on the one washer, I guess I'll try removing that.

With no blades or paddles, there is no inertia in the head. It won't spin very much on its own.
Put the paddles and blades on and see how it spins.
And yes, gears need some break in time before they are fully free.

I have the same problem. I removed the head, motor, and diconnected the belt. That leaves the 4 gears and the main shaft connected. When I turn the main shaft by hand it I can turn it 180 degrees in parallel to the main shaft gear both directions before I feel resistance. It takes at least 4 pound of force to move it pass that position.
I have tried to isolate the problem by removing the pulley then the 42T gear but the problem is still there. I did notice I have two washers on the 19T gear. I know I have to remove one. I will continue to find the problem.

Sounds like you have a gear that is "really" out of round and causing the resistance.

"How free is your Head"
You guys must know by now that "Head" is never free and always costs you in the long run!!

I know it costs more than heli in the head!

Just the head should spin very easily - very little force, negligible. But as mentioned it will not spin long without some inertial mass.
The real test is when it is all configured. I just love it when I have to stand there and wait for the blades to spool down. And wait.....And wait...
The Hurri just hangs there in an auto. You should be able to fly it a little in ground effect if it is spinning well.
