Do I need a starter thing to start the engine on my trex600n, or can I use the rotostart device that came with my Savage?

I'm not sure what a rotorstart is but you need a 6mm hex head start shaft
They make two styles, clamp on, and and one for the rubber cones. I use the cone style so I can pop it out and start airplanes.
http://www.heliproz.com/prodinfo.asp?number=803235 is the cone style

ah, those starters have 1 ways on the head it self, starting a heli engine with a rotostart would probably break it then.
Was thinking then, if I get one of them devices used for starting helis like a Sullivan Dynatron Super Power Starter, can I use 2x 7.4v 3000mah NiMH packs to power it? lugging around a car battery to power it, or buying an expensive lipo pack doesnt seem so hot

With a Dyantron you can run anything from 12 volts to 24 volts. So you could do 3 x 7.2 volt NiMH packs. Or a 5S lipo, or probably the neatest setup is the adapter for a Makita 18 volt LiIon pack. Not the cheapest solution, but very convenient.

awsome thx. I have 6 7.2 packs that dont get used much, for my e-maxx so they'll be useful again :)

One more question: with the Sullivan Dynatron, for the hex, will this work? http://www.amainhobbies.com/product_info.php/products_id/9478
Thanks

Yes, that will work. But of course, the ultimate for the Dynatron is the Sullivan starter wand. Looks cool, works great. :)
The TT one you link to, is fine for a Trex 600N, and MOST other helis, but it doesn't have a one way bearing, so the heli has to have one.
