Why do we not use them in our helis? Seems to me like they would last lots longer than the nylon gears, but I am sure you all will let me know all the bad reasons there are to use metal.

The short answer is that they're heavier, more expensive, require lubrication, can cause RFI, and don't really last longer. The plastic main spur on my R50 is over 500 flights old and looks new.

Kinda what I thought except the part about not lasting much longer than the nylon gear. appreciate it.

Most of the metal geared servos develop slop fairly quick also in a heli application.
Plastic gear sets run on the average of about $5-$6
Metal gear sets run between $20 and $60.

Also the metal gear train is not all metal. There is normally a couple of plastic gears in the gear train.

Your right about the metal main gear not lasting MUCH LONGER than the plastic gear.
A metal main gear will wear out a lot faster than a plastic main gear unless you mount it in a sealed gearbox with proper lubrication.

They are noisy! I have sealed metal gears in my Condor and they just now 'broke-in' but you can still hear them.

I like the open tail I got from Cforcht for my Rappy 60. I can just look and see they are just fine.

Do you have a pic of that open tail? Where do you fly, I am between Charlottesville and Richmond?
