I had a small incident the other day which bent my tail shaft on my new CopterX tail. I have ordered some replacement shafts but for the moment I simply put my original tail back on and all was well again.

The reason for the post is that after I had bent it, I tried to fly again, and I wanted to explain what happened. It didn't seem to be too badly bent and I thought I would get away with it, however the vibration that it caused through the whole heli structure was quite significant. It made the heli far noisier and worse, it made it impossible to set the tail. At first I thought my gyro had been damaged because no matter how I tweaked the tail servo position, or messed with the gain of the gyro, the tail control was simply awful. When I re-fitted my original plastic tail, and the vibrations were gone, I managed to set the tail correctly, in about two minutes, so the gyro was obviously fine.

I can only conclude from this that the gyro would not function correctly because it was being subjected to moderate to severe vibration from the tail. I have not had this problem before from head vibrations, on the odd occasion when I have put up with them, so my further conclusion is that it was caused by the much higher frequency vibrations generated by the tail.

Maybe others having difficulty setting up their tail, or assuming their gyro is faulty, might want to consider if there is any vibration coming from the tail and carefully check their tail shaft, perhaps it could be the cause. Just a thought at least worth considering, I should think.

Good point. All gyros are sensitive to vibration, so eliminating it should be one of the first steps in tracking down tail holding issues. That's also the reason you should only use proper gyro mounting pads, and never secure the gyro with tie wraps or velcro strips. Anything you can do to dampen vibration and avoid transmitting it to the gyro will help.
