View Full Version : How to change locked up starter coupler in Fury Extreme?

I purchased a new, but assembled Fury Extreme. The person who put the starter coupler on the Fury used a standard hex start coupler, but I have the MA one way bearing style of starter.

The problem is that the person who assembled the heli used RED lock-tight to secure the starter coupler. I cannot get it to come free, although I did get the allen lock screws (sorry brain fade here I know there is a name for them, but I can't remember) .

Anyway I was thinking I'd have to apply some heat onto the area of the coupler but I want to remove it from the CF frame before I do so. It looks as if I am going to have to disassemble the entire frame to get this apart. Or is there another option?

Thanks for any help

Take a red hot soldiering iron and stick it in the middle of the starter coupling. Make sure the set screws are loose or loosen them while you are applying the heat. Give it a little while and it will come off. Thats what I do to remove mine.

Take the motor out.
Then the clutch driver and start shaft block will come out of the heli.
Take a small torch and heat the hex adapter. Twist it will some pliers and it will come right off the shaft.
I use red loctite to secure my hex adapters to the shaft. This is how I remove them from the shaft when needed.
This is how the clutch will be removed

Engine mounts: Take the four bolts that hold the engine in place. And remove one engine mount on the right side to get the engine out of the heli.

Also make sure that the start shaft is smooth after removal before you use the 1 way. If it is damaged or if he grounded a flat on the shaft you will need to get the start shaft replaced.

I place aluminum foil around the frames leaving an air gap between the foil and frame, grab the propane torch and heat it up by waving the flame onto and off the adapter taking care not to get too close to the frames.
A couple of seconds of that and a rap with a socket seated atop the adapter and it comes right off.
no frame disassembly required if you are careful

one time the starter coupler was stuck on my heli, so we took the set screws out then kept hitting it with the starter(grunty starter) in short burst's... and finally it came off... you can also use a normal starter i would think...

Good luck

You can also hold a 6mm allen wrench with pliers, heat it up with a torch, then place it in your hex adapter and let the heat transfer to the adapter. It only takes a few seconds and the hex should come right off. Hammer showed me this technique when I was red locktiting the hex adapters on my R90's and it works GREAT without damaging anything.
