View Full Version : How do different blade sizes affect performance?

First off - Brand new to HeliFreak and I love this site. Lots of very useful info I wish I had before doing so much damage :( But I got my Blade CP flying very well right now and am loving it - this from an RC car guy of 20+ years who just now tried his first heli.

My question is - how do different main blade dimensions affect performance? I need a new set and see quite a few different sizes (in Length, Width, Root, Weight...) that all say they will fit my Blade. For a noob mostly practicing in my garage, does it even matter that much?

Thanks all.

In very general speak...the longer the blade, the more stable, but less responsive the heli will be. The shorter the blade, the more responsive but less stable.....

The longer the blades, the lower you can run teh headspeed for more duration, or at the same headspeed, the higher the lift if you need to lift a payload.

Heavier blades make teh hely more stable, but less responsive, but (on larger helis) increase rotor energy for autos.

Wide chord increases lift for the same length blade.

Be aware that a blade's tip radius is the largest factor in the power required to swing said blade. See my post here:
