View Full Version : Gyro... Logictech or Futaba

I am trying to decide what to do for my CopterX when it arrives, I have a Logictech 2100T/3100G gyro/servo combo on my belt and am quite happy with it but not sure whether to go with that or the GY401 for the CopterX and not sure which Futaba servo to use if I do go that way.
Anyone used both gyros? Any opinions on what servo would best suit the GY401 on the CopterX?
Thanks

I think the GY401 is the bestif you are going to get a micro tail servo. But if you want a good mini size tail servo it might be a bit too heavy for the tail.
The logictech is smaller and lighter which would probably be better for a 450 size heli.

I have a GY401 + S9257 on my HDX450, an LTG-2100T + S9650 on the HDX500, and an LTG-2100T + DS285 on a King/CopterX hybrid. Now, remember I haven't tried to mix the gyros, servos and helicopters so it's not a direct comparison... and I don't really do anything that would push them much. But for what it's worth, my experience seems to confirm what you usually hear about them.
The 2100 is more sensitive to vibration and more finicky about a perfect mechanical setup, but it's harder to get good piro rates out of the GY401. So far I haven't been able to get quite the same holding power out of the Logictech, but that could very well be due to the servos and tail linkage. And don't get me wrong... It's not like I can find any fault with the Logictech's performance, it's just that the GY401 and S9257 feel like pure freaking magic. Setup is more or less the same on both, but I like the Logictech's separately adjustable limits and piro rate.
Can't really pick a favorite out of those two... The Futaba is a little overpriced for what it is, but otherwise there's very little to choose between them.
As for servos, the S9254 is probably the current "ultimate" but you don't really need the torque (and weight!) on a 450, particularly if you do the chinese weights mod. The S9257 is the most perfect match I could find. The S9650 is a popular choice too, but it's a lot slower and I only use it on the 500 for the extra torque.

Thanks Mika, that's what I was looking for. I have found on my Logictech that it was a pain to get set up and the only way I can seem to get it working properly is with a perfect mechanical setup I still need to give 1 click of trim on the rudder for it to then lock properly otherwise it just creeps slowly one way or the other.
I think I will go for the GY401/S9257 combo (then I can make my own mind up between the Logictech and Futaba options), I assume I will need a step down regulator for the S9257 as it does not run at 6v I believe?
At the moment I am not needing anything to extreme anyway, are the chinese weight mods worth doing if I am not doing 3d?

Yes, I think the S9257 is 4.8 V only... and I would at least give the tail mod a try so you can see for yourself. I simply used longer bolts through the tail blades, so it only took about five minutes to do. I'm pretty happy with how it affected my tail response. Takes a lot of load off the tail servo, and I think you'll feel it even in light sports flying.

I have no experience with the Logitech, But on the Trex I am using atm a 401 and jr 3400g Mini servo. It runs at 6v so no need for the step down and the balance is pretty well spot on. I have also used this servo on the same heli with a jr g7703d. I little pricey though. I move it over to the 500 when I built that.
I like the 401 with this servo it just works.

Have to ask: what is the mod you are talking about?

Chinese weight mod.
Search for it in the forum and you will find out heaps.
Finless has a Vid of it in his tech room too.

Darin, thanks mate. But a little late :o Ordered the GY401 and S9257 this morning along with 2 x AR7000 receivers, Gorilla landing skids and a few spares for the CopterX. Need to get the step down now, anyone got a part number?
