View Full Version : Duralite Charging - Opps not good!!!

I liked the DL's so much in my Rx's I bought them for my Futaba 9CHS. I asked do I have to take it out to charge it? He said, "No, I am going to throw in an adapter" but there was not one in the box.
No big deal. I cut a servo extension and cut the old Futaba charger cable I no longer need. I wire it up (black-white line wire to red) coming off the Duralite charger but I do not get a "green light". Umm O.K. So I reverse them and get a green light. GREAT! Does not seem right but O.K.
I few minutes later I smell something. Did I turn off the soldering gun? Yep.
Look over CRAP!
At least the radio is O.K. I guess the first way was correct????

Man that is awefull. I am just waking up but and my last post went up at 3 am but dude this is BAD. Does that charger say " REC "??????? Looks like it was telling you that it was not a " TX " charger.......... It does not look like a multicharger. Just wanted to see which charger you have.

Dan, that REC charger is not made to charge the TX packs. Even if you had gotten the TX charge lead, (It come with the TX charger not the TX pack, there was NO mistake that Duralite did not send it to you) you would not have been able to charge the TX battery using the REC battery charger. The TX pack charge lead will not plug into a REC charge port, even on the charger that is made to charge the TX and RX packs. They do it that way to keep people from trying to charge their TX Pack with the REC port on the charger.
Sorry to see the REC charger is toast.
I am very glad it did not turn out worse than it did, that could have been very bad. Scarrrrrryyyy man. :shock:

Reciever packs are 7.4 volts
Transmitter pack is 11.1 volts.
As was mentioned . The TX charger has a different receptable on it than the RX charger. So it is not possible to plug a TX charge cord into an RX charger and vice versa.
Sorry to hear about your problem. Glad it was only the charger that was lost.

Yep I took the pack out of the Radio and actually looked it it (duh).... then hooked it up to the Super Brain charger. All seems to be well with it (It had a pretty good charge - and is taking a charge)
I will order a new charger(s) on Mon. :arggg:
Although I do not like charging lypolys in the radio perhaps I will continue to use the old "Super Brain". It topped them back off in like 10 minutes.

Be careful using the brain dan. I have one and I know it. Also, if you don't use the Duralite Charger on teh TX pack, it will void the warranty on it. Just wanted to make sure you know that.
Also, they are not Li-Polys it is a Li-Ion pack.

It has been a bad morning. I am not flying today. I just finished measuring carefully and drilling a hole in the wall. Only to find the mount I had was too short.
I had better go get a drink and watch some football or something :bomb:

I just got through picking out a tree, cutting it down and bringing it back and putting it in the stand with my wife and 5YO. I would LOVE to join you for that drink Dan and watch a game!

they have a lead that will allow you to charge out of the radio on the 9c that is what I recomend. You can also charge in the radio witht he same lead I use on the 9Z but I remove the pack from the TX. Be carefull as I feel you dodged a bulle so to speak. Man I am glad that it was not worse.

Yes. I was lucky and I had my ABC extinguisher at the ready buy would not want to have had to "explain".

Dan, get the multicharger. I got the 4 in 1 Duralite charger and charge almost all my lipo's and All my Li-Ion packs on it.
Go buy lottery tickets this week, you just got a free house!

I still don't understand using Li-Ions in a transmitter. Don't get me wrong, Li-Ion receiver packs are great, but why would one spend the money, over $100 not counting charging and balancing equipment, for a 1600 mah Li-Ion pack when a 2100 mah NiMh pack can be had for just over $30. Dan could have lost his transmitter. A transmitter is an ideal application for a NiMh battery. Maybe I'm just slow, but I don't think so.

Like I said I just like the way they worked and I am a "brand" guy i.e. if something is working I stick with it.
Flying all day Sat. and looking down and still seeing +12v on the transmitter was a nice.

a 3S lipo works too, but without the 'failsafe' of having a redundant pack.

I like one charger plug and play and I never charge in the radio .........no exceptions.

I understand what your saying. But one of my main reasons for switching to the Li-Ion pack in the transmitter was simple for me. The Li-ion pack weighs considerably less than the Nicad or nimh pack. Their is several ounces different between the batteries weight.
In the 9Z it makes a difference. I have had others pick up my 9Z and ask if the battery was in it. This is from pilots using the 9Z and stock battery. Then they will go and get a Li-ion set up to go in there 9Z.
That is the difference for me, plus with the higher voltage to the transmitter. The battery last longer for me than the stock battery did.

I like the TX battery because it is light and I charge it right off the multi-charger. Very nice feature all at one time.

the CD at our pylon race was charging an airplane lipo in his van with a 109 charger sunday. i was refueling my plane when i noticed smoke coming out of the doors of his van, grabbed an extinguisher and yelled for help. Can't believe he would charge in the airplane,in the van, burned two nice a/c and a new van up.
I won't make that mistake i hope. i remove batts and charge outside of the car and stay with the batt in the garage. c-ya Ron :bomb:
