NOTE: Date is SEPT. 6, Saturday. (can't figure out how to correct title yet, asked moderator for help)

We have a core of enthusiastic heli pilots at Atlanta RC club, and we will be having a fun fly
Sat. SEPT. 6, 2008. 9am to 3pm, Fun flying all day. No specific events before 10am. Lots of free flying. AMA required.

Location: Atlanta RC Club, 1576 Constitution Rd, SE, Atlanta, GA 30316
This is convenient to I-285: We are just inside the Atlanta perimeter on the SE side.
15 minutes from downtown Atlanta.

We will be closing the runway that day, and have a big area to fly.

We'll have hamburgers & hotdog lunches at $5-6.
All registrants will vote for trophy awards:
Funfly events:
Best 3D flight
Best Looking Helicopter
Best Crash

Special event: "Spot Landing autorotation contest" -winner-take-all contest.

(more potential events are being considered; If you have seen a heli fun fly event you liked, please post it in this thread and we'll consider it.)
Possible Limbo, Inverted for experts; "right side up" for more sane pilots.

Event Director: Kip Laurie, skilled Trex pilot.
We will have a safety director: If we are uncomfortable with someone's flying style, we will ask them to tone it down and/ or to stay in a specific area farther from spectators.

club website: http://www.atlrcclub.com/
(This new event is not on the website yet, give us a few days)

Sounds like fun but I turn 21 in the 4th and may still be too hungover to fly. We'll see

Just a guess. But I would think the event planners told the club they would only have the event till 3PM.

We will be closing the runway that day, and have a big area to fly.

I have been to one day events and really enjoyed them. Never been to an event that is only 6 hours(9AM -3PM) long thou. <G>

Hour and a half from NJ ? Man your fast! I asked about that 3 pm deal from day one on another forum and I am still waiting for an answer. Anyhow looks like weather is not going to be good.

Ya have to find out if we can fly passed 3pm. I was hoping to spend the day and then stay the night seeing it's a 4-5hr drive for me. but not worth driving 8-10hrs for only 6hrs of flying.

I emailed the Atlanta R/C club about this, I really hope we get an update on this before Friday.

Hi,

Reminder: AMA required to fly at the club.

Our "official" event time was til 3pm as the "event Director" picked that timing, and he volunteered to run things, so that's how that got picked. He also said a reason to set this 6 hour window was just to clarify that that would be the main time to be there to catch all the main action, compete in the few fun events, vote for the winners, etc.

But I don't see it as a "closing time" or anything. We often fly until dark.

For the fun fly we'll be closing the paved runway to fixed wing models, and dividing up the airspace into 3 heli flying areas.

After 3pm? This is a pretty laid back club where it is totally unpredictable how many people come out to fly, and we've been spreading the word this will be a HELI day with closed runway.

It is most likely we'll keep the runway for Heli's only to dark.

Feel free to ask more specific questions and I'll try to answer.

Hello, all. The 3PM time was a time to give out awards as it is a time when many people start packing up. Pilots are welcome to fly until sunset. We can delay the awards until later if things are still going strong, which I hope happens. We have some nice little trophies so come get em!
We need to get the auto contest pot big also :)

WE HAVE THE RUNWAY ALL DAY. NO FIXED WING!

Kip

$5 in the pot to enter.

1) Objective…closest to target measured from target to main shaft, please stop blades
2) 5 autos allowed, 2 practice, 3 for real
3) Practice can be waived, must be called before
4) Of 3 “real” autos the furthest is thrown out
5) Winner has lowest cumulative distance of the two best autos
6) If your heli crashes on it’s side and the auto must count then the distance will be doubled
7) Autos must be from at least 50 feet
8) Power recovery counts as “throw out” attempt

No second place. Winner takes all!

It's basically all open flying except for the auto contest at 1PM. The $10 registration fee pays for the trophies and setup supplies. Any extra will be deposited into the Club account which goes for field maintenance. Lunch will be included in this fee and you'll be given a coupon at registration. Also, you will be give two ballots, one for "Pilot's Choice" heli and one for "Best 3D Pilot". The ballots will be tallied later in the day for the trophy winners. The pilots choice awards goes to the all around heli whether it's worth $50 or $2000, scale, whatever. It's just whatever the pilots like. The best 3D pilot goes to whomever the other pilot's think is the best based on his/her flying. All pilots will have a number and voters will simply note the number of the pilot and write it on the ballot. The third trophy is for best crash. The 4 staff pilots will decide this you so if you burn in good make sure we see it:)

Thanks to all registered pilots today for making the drive and flying safely.
The trophy winners were...
-"Best 3D Pilot"...Matt Botos.
Evan Richey and Art Hughes followed with only one vote
separating each. Everyone had some grass punishing
moments.
-"Pilot's Choice Heli"...Steven Poretz.
Steve had his vintage 30+ year old model and his super
slow headspeed ship that had everyone talking.
-"Best Crash"...Joe Polidore. He suffered an electrical cutoff type
failure that resulted in the hardest ground shaking hit
all day. We had a couple of runway hits but Joe's was the
grandest. Sorry and congrats at the same time.

Harlan McCullough took the auto contest pot with a combined distance of 22 inches for two autos. He must have been having a bad day;)

Post pics if you have em...

Art, having you, Evan and Matt there really rounded out the event. We look forward to having you back next year. That bald spot on the grass was a great testament to your presence:)
