View Full Version : Wierd Tail Wag Problem

I've developed a strange tail wag with my 550. I thought it might have something to do with the T600 TR hub and grips, but I've been through all that and that is not the problem. Here's the symptoms. The heli is fine at takeoff and hover. However, as the flight goes on the tail starts to wag. I can accelerate the process by doing a punch-out or high power aero or 3D.

Here's some of the things I think it could be.

Batteries:
There is a chance it could be battery related. The headspeed on the FlightPowers is 500 rpm less than the Outrage pack. The FPs have about 50+ cycles each. Thing is, it does it with both battery types.

Motor/ESC
I did have a problem with the insulation on the motor wires rubbing against the frame and wearing through. I re-insulated the wires and rerouted to correct the problem. Maybe the damage was done. Runs OK on the bench without the pinion, but there is not load.

Also, it could be the ESC. Especially since it seems to be heat affected. Maybe something is getting hot and becoming intermittent. Also, it could be a thing where the battery voltage is falling low enough that it starts bouncing in and out of shutdown.

OWB:
I have the 20T OWB in and it seems to be good on the bench; however, in flight, this could be the problem. After a punch-out it probably slips a little and then, as it gets warm from slipping, it starts to slip more and more as the slight goes on. I have a 19T OWB that I can put in to test. Might we worth a look. I can fly it with the current OWB and check with a heat gun to see if it's getting hot. Then put in the 19T OWB to see if the problem goes away. If that's it I need a new 20T OWB. Plus I may have some green Locktite at home to fix the 20T.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

mike.....meet bob javu.he's dave javu's brother(aka deja'vu).....what i found and it took ages was on one side my head dampner rubber was very slightly popping out maybe 30sec into lifting off and starting to fly outa hovering.but once you came back down and spooled down it was slipping back in leading to wtf?i did'nt pick it up till it got really bad and while going over it i noticed an almost inperceptible(other guy in the room couldn't see it) difference in the gap between the head block and grips...it was causing an almost circular waggle in the tail

I;d start with the OWB since it's reasonably easy to replace, and if it fixes it great if not at least you elimate that idea.
