I know this is a newb question... besides earning the the ability to say "Ive gone flybarless".... why ditch the wonderful device that makes our lives so comfortable?>

A big part of the hobby for me is to tinker around and try new stuff. I converted my TRex 450 to flybarless and have learned some things
One thing I learned is my heli uses batteries more efficiently. That discovery lead me to convert my 600e to flybarless as well.
I can't say once you try it you will never go back. However, for me, it has worked out very well.

You've gotta fly it to believe it
It has both more stability and more mobility that a heli with a fly bar
Mine can almost aileron tic toc faster than I can keep up with
Mine will hover in the wind while I piro madly - no corrections needed
When I give it full cyclic stick - it cracks over
It's really cool
But there is a lot of homework and learning to work through

Well then, it sounds like a good mod for the adventuring type....However if it posseses all of these wonderful 'butes why sell them with the extra hard ware?
What extra hardware?
Um, you need a swash driver to hold the inner swash
If your heli was not designed for flybarless then you can get after market heads
that are optimized for the flybarless configuration
If you use VStabi you need less gear - no tail gyro required
(VStabi has three axis gyro and does the tail for you)

It is cheaper to make a helicopter with a flybar. The electronics required for flybarless add up fast. That is getting better and a few (Mikado) are starting to come as a flybarless kit. Setup can also be tricky depending on the system used so they are not generally for the beginner although newer software and components are also making setup easier.
i changed mine to flybarless cos it gives ya free extra power  i don`t use any electronic stab , so shes a tad lighter too :) and most of all she goes like stink and blatts around perfectly plus i was bored flyin around and wanted a challenge , it does the caos mega quick now :lol::lol::lol:

so you dont need any modules to go flybarless, only a HH gyro?

brian,
You need at least a mixer (I use the AP2000i) to convert eccmp for flybarless - but I only use a gyro for tail- no ele/ail stabilizaton. It is a new thrill to fly without stab and it can get away from you but produces interesting flight. Blade design can have large effect - I use Radix and Maverikk Patriot blades with good effect.

So is there a good place to go to start doing some homework? After I learn to fly a heli, I like to work on building a scale two bladed and maybe later a 4/5 bladed helicopter.
Will a 7 channel radio work fine with flybarless helicopter or do you need to buy a 9/10 channel radio? I'd like to have one channel open for say lights for say building a Bell Jet Ranger or maybe a Hughes 500D. Looking at 450 helis as they seem more affordable to fly vs the 600s.

You don't need any extra channel on the Rx for flybarless.
At least not on my SK360...
I use 6 channels the same way as when it had a flybar installed.

In the case of the vbar if you don't use bank switching through the radio then you actually are down to only using 5 channels.
What advantages does going flybar-less have to offer a sport pilot who does general flying, no 3D ?
I'm currently flying a Logo 10 on 4s Lipo, 1800 headspeed, 515mm glas blades, 401/9254 combo. My intentions are to practice loops and rolls this winter on my Realflight G3 sim and try them on the heli next Summer.

there are a lot reasons for me to dislike a flybar
a) too many ball links and more difficult in set up
b) less slop
c) easier to track the blade
d) less parts to replace after crash
e) less power consumption
f) more stable in strong wind
g) more responsive cyclic
h) the mixer function gives more accurate set up
i) more preference available for flight style
j) more power with stock motor and cheap Lipo
k) more accurate cyclic control
l) more quite flight
cons
a) expensive than flybar
b) needs a bit of set up but easy (to me at least)

if you use bank switching in the future SK 360 firmware, you will need that

Thanks for the tip.
I am using the external BEC on channel 7. Seems like I have to solder it to the output from my ESC.

Can anyone enlighten me about the mixing you need to do when flying without the bars? What is it about is mech or electronic mixing?

Haywire, there are three ways to go flybarless
a) only remove the flybar without any other change (no additional device) then you will still rely on the swash mixing in your Tx but you will have a very unstable flight
b) remove the flybar and use two gyros on the cyclic axis, aileron and elevator, in this case you will set your Tx to one servo mode and need to have a CCPM mixer then the hook up will be Rx to gyros and then mixer and servo.
c) use flybarless device such as SK 360, in this case, you plug the device between Rx and servo and that is it...
