Since these gears have the same number of teeth, once they break-in against each other they shouldn't be allowed to jump teeth.

What I mean by this.. I took apart my tail for maintenance and separated the tail gears. Unless I join them back on the exact same teeth they were broken in on, I get a severe notchy-then-smooth-then-notchy effect.

I know that the closed tail is somewhat old-school these days, but I'm sticking with it. Is this notchy/smooth effect something I need to worry about, or does it break-in all over again? ...Or should I just keep trying until I find the correct tooth again?

Sounds to me like you got the mesh too tight. It should not matter if the teeth match up like they were before.

I've been told that when the gears are brand-new and dry, the proper mesh will feel consistently notchy all the way around. That's how I initially set mine up. When I added grease, it smoothed out immediately to where the notchyness was gone. ...Just by adding the grease.

With the used gears, I feel notchyness only in a certain spot. But the notchyness is more intense. ...and on the other side it's smooth.

I am using the closed gear boxes. I take the gear box apart and clean it out every 50-75 flights. I put the gear box back together and add grease. I mesh the gears and go fly. I have as little back lash as possible and the gears still turn smoothly. I have very little back lash. When holding one gear and moving the other. It will only rock back and forth very little. These gears have been in the gear box for a long time. They even ran on a left side rotation gear box before I changed it over to right side rotation.

Hmm... Well I ordered some new gears. Maybe something is amiss with my setup.

I'm regreting this... It was super smooth and well adjusted before I took it apart and broke it.
